I now have a Hughes Autoformer which also has a circuit analyzer that I plug in to test the power before connecting the RPod.While it may not detect every single possible fault, it is reliable enough that I trust it to help me avoid similar situations.
That can happen in a campground. One thing you can do is disconnect your power cord and measure from the ground on your 30 Amp connector to the trialer frame. It should be O ohms. That tells you your trailer ground at the trailer is a good connection. The top two connectors should be "open" and the bottom spade should be shorted to the frame. That would be good. Then you can suspect the power source is the issue. That is a plus of your power cord and not using extension cords and adapters. I use my protector as a circuit checker here at house. To make sure there is a ground from the power panel to the 30A RV connector I had installed. Good post.

An EMS is a type of surge protector that including on-board testing for over and under voltages, as well as an open ground. EMS is short for Electrical Monitoring System and typically sold by two main companies, Progressive Industries and SurgeGuard. Expect to pay between $300 to $500 for a "smart" surge protector with EMS capabilities. And no, just because you have an EMS installed doesn't mean you can't have a hot-skin voltage. One of the most dangerous mis-wiring conditions I've discovered and named is an RPBG for Reverse Polarity Bootleg Ground, and there's no surge protector on the market, smart EMS or whatever" that can detect or disconnect your RV from an RPBG miswired outlet. That's because the entire RV frame and chassis is bonded to practically everything else in the RV. So if you point your NCVT at the wheel or lug nuts that will certainly indicate if there's a hot-skin voltage. Same goes for the tow hitch, propane tanks, door frame, and yes, metal skin.

Also, your tow vehicle is bonded to the RV chassis via the hitch, safety chains, and electrical plug. So if you're connected to an RV which has a hot-skin voltage, then your tow vehicle will also have a hot-skin voltage. Now you see why I don't like the word "hot-skin" which implies it's only the skin of the RV that's energized. In reality, it's the CHASSIS of the RV that's been electrically energized, and everything that's bonded to it (just about everything metal inside of, on, or connected to your RV) will go along for the ride and be electrically energized with a "hot-skin" voltage.

Mike Sokol
No~Shock~Zone
