we have a 2009 R Pod 173. North Carolina combines the county vehicle tax and license tag costs in one bill-you have to pay both at the same time.  They break it down as $24.00  for the tag and $108.76   for the tax.  This is a yearly fee.

Both of our current trailers were 75.00 each, plated in Michigan. In Ohio, 45.00 per year, per trailer. A permanent MI plate for our rPod was $75 in 2009. They used to be around $15, at least for a small trailer, but renewed every year. Cost was based on weight. They still charge based on weight. Here's a fee calculator from the MI Secretary of State:

I just received our renewal for our 171. Here in Oregon we buy a renewal every two years. My total for two years was $141. Not too bad, but certainly not free. I learned this from my neighbor who owns 5 different utility trailers. He learned it word of mouth from someone else. After learning about & then putting it into action on his trailers, I have noticed a significant number of trailers in Northwestern Ohio plated that way. I asked a customer who is an Ohio State Patrolman about Ohio's stance on this. His quote was " Ohio's Stance is that they have no stance". We have run our other trailers 3 years this way with no problems. That sounds odd, at least from Ohio's perspective, but laws can be strange.  Tennessee allows you to buy a yearly tag or a permanent one; your choice.  I'm pretty sure TN wants your money and doesn't allow you to buy tags from other states. 

You may get an answer from someone who actually knows and lives in Ohio or Michigan, but I'd tend to rely more on answers from your state's BMV, or in TN, DMV, than from answers on the internet.  Cf: operating propane fridges.

Here in Ohio, we have to buy trailer plates & renew them yearly. In Michigan, You buy a permanent trailer plate & never renew it again as long as you own the trailer. That said, A person living in Ohio can buy a permanent trailer plate from Michigan & use it on their trailer that resides in Ohio. The only stipulation by the state of Michigan is that "they'd like you to use it at least 50% of the time in Michigan". According to the girl at the BMV. Living just south of the Michigan border, we have plated our Coleman & utility trailer this way. And we are planning to do the same with our Pod.
