Author: Old Dingo&Mrs.Dingo
Subject: 4401
Posted: 11 Feb 2014 at 6:51pm

Yeah, you're right Furpod, a fifteen percent discount is offered if you take enough sites, the problem is, considering the amenities available, the base fee is just too high to begin with.

For instance, the state campground, with no water, no electric, before discount, (and various "add ons") was $50 for two days, in sites that were, to us, completely unacceptable. Over the phone, we were quoted an "add on" for pets in a designated "pet site"! Only about one half of the campground was open to four footed campers!

The private campgrounds, like River's Edge KOA, were more expensive, ($48-$53 per day, with the discount) and resembled a dirt parking lot with just a few trees randomly scattered throughout. Apparently, in KOA parlance, "wooded sites" means you can SEE trees from it. There were some sites with big trees by the river, but they were full hook-ups in the $60 range and there were only a few.

Some of the nicest sounding private campgrounds in the area are tents only so they didn't have dump stations or electric. Some were simply not acceptable, old, run down, or poorly maintained. One had pit toilets and no showers. Others are just too far away from most of the area's attractions, such as the campgrounds in West Virginia and further north in Somerset county.

We found out most of the drawbacks when we called to inquire about specific sites. Our two days left us frustrated, we would have been embarrassed to have you come to those campgrounds we found. But we'll keep looking, maybe we'll find something acceptable for 2015.

Might be something to think about as it might be cost-effective for your proposed rally.

Bob
At first the state park looked promising, but a phone call reveled the state's penchant for high fees and "highway robbery" they euphemistically call; "add ons". Private campgrounds in the area couldn't readily accommodate us, and their rate schedules were, also, a little too immoderate for our needs.

We will keep an eye open for an opportunity to introduce everyone to our little piece of America, at a later date.

Those electric only sites in the circle are not "pet friendly". To get "pet friendly" sites we will have to reserve sites that are more expensive, and in a different part of the park. Some of the sites have 50 amp service, and some (across the road) do not have electric at all. We are planning to check out the sites tomorrow, but there is about 12" of snow to wade through, as the road is blocked. Does not look promising, more details later.

We are trying to gauge interest in a Rally for July 18-20 2014. The Ohiopyle area has whitewater rafting, Laurel caverns, Historical sites (French and Indian war), Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Water", camping and biking trails. Looks like the cost for a PA resident will be approx. $15 per day. We can block off 9, electric only, sites in a "circle", at the end of a campground road, but for a limited time only. Because of PA state park rules we must pay for the sites when reserved, and PA state parks fill up fast. So let us know how much interest there is, if there is enough we'll make additional plans for the weekend.

I suppose we will assume the "mantle" of "unleader".
