Author: sammycamper
Subject: 4337
Posted: 15 Feb 2014 at 5:18pm

We camped in Glacier back in the mid-90's, so it's been too long for me to offer any specific recommendations except: GO! It rained every day we were there, but that trip stands out as our family's all-time favorite. Glacier is just heart-stoppingly beautiful in every direction that you look. The warnings about brown bears kept things interesting, and the park staff was just awesome. Our daughters were about 5 and 10 years old at the time, but their mother and I were just as entertained by the park rangers' nightly campfire talks as the kids were. Going-to-the-sun Highway is breathtaking at every turn, and it has buzzillions of turns. The buildings in the park are gorgeous inside and out.

I don't know the name of the campground anymore, but we had an absolutely perfect site. It was a shallow-U situation that we were able to just pull into and unhook the camper. That left the back of our camper facing a field across the campground road, the the front of our camper faced the clearing of the site itself. The site was big, with a campfire pit and plenty of room for us to setup a big screen tent. Behind the site itself, there was nothing but forest. On a daily basis, we walked the path from our site through the woods and down a hill to a pristine mountain lake. I don't thing we ever saw another person on that walk for the nearly 2 weeks we were there. The park is so vast that it's hundreds of visitors on any given day can still have their privacy.

In spite of the intermittant but daily rain, I don't believe we've ever had any camping experience as fulfilling as Glacier.

Sam

We stayed on the east side as well. Beautiful area for sure.

The only hike we did in the area was at the summit (Hidden Lake). It's pretty well-traveled but leads out to a beautiful overlook and we saw lots of wildlife. It's a rare hike that is pretty much all above tree-line. The summit area is beautiful and there was a really interesting area (Sunrift Gorge if I recall) with an interesting creek through a crack in the rock. I did ride my bike down from the pass as well! My wife drove me to the top and the WEEEEEeeeeee!!!!

We stayed at St. Mary's campground and at Rising Sun. We preferred Rising Sun (we're tent campers), but St. Mary's might be better for an R-Pod. The sites are a great deal more open.

We tend to cook for ourselves, so no great insight there. Truthfully, there's not a ton of options on the east side.

The second week of Sept will for sure get you some cold weather so plan accordingly.
