I love that whole area, and ditto all the recommendations for Custer State Park. It's more like a national park experience. The nicest private campground we've ever stayed in is called Rafter J-Bar Ranch, outside Hill City, SD. It doesn't just look good, with all its Ponderosa Pines, it smells good. I'd also recommend a slow sweep through the Badlands, and maybe an overnighter at the KOA there. It's been 15 years since we were there last; but there was a great family-run diner just a short distance from the Badlands Koa. I'd love to think it's still there, and get a report.

Smile Did the Rushmore area last July. Stayed at KOA in Rushmore. Central, easy in/out, but big and commercial. We spent time in that area a few years ago pre-pod. We used KOA for tenting in Hardin, MT (Custer Battlefield) and cabins in Devil's Tower (would use again with the pod, not the bathrooms - major bug area, and never in a tent - red ant hills eveywhere in tenting area) and Badlands (great KOA, thankful for AC with day 105ish). We spend four nights tenting at Rafter J Bar Campground in the Black Hills and would go back. We visited Custer State Park, Deadwood, Mt Rushmore (which now has a well-done museum if you have been there in 20 years).

If you have time, and enjoy history, stop at the Little Big Horn Battlefield. Small but interesting museum, but great drive around the battlefield. Don't recall the parking situation, since it was one of our day trips. If you are interested in L&C sites, Pompey's Pillar is just east of Billings.

Sounds like a fun trip! We are working on Montana ideas, but are already too late to get a spot at Glacier NP for next summer. I've stumped for the Mammoth Site at Hot Springs, SD before. If it's you're kinda stuff, it's pretty fascinating. Thanks so much! I booked a site at Custer State Park - Blue Bell campground. I only booked two nights, but might have to add a third!

We'll be coming from Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park and as much as we would like to take a side trip to Devil's Tower, Im not sure we'll make it. If not, I will carve a likeness in mashed potatoes! Wink

It looks like Little Bighorn Battlefield is right off Route 90 about halfway between Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park and Custer. Great tip!

According to my tripmeter, we're up to 5100 miles at Custer State Park and feel we've only begun to explore what should be explored. What was that Brody said in Jaws? -  "You're gonna need a bigger RV!"

Custer State Park is a must do if camping in SD.  An easy drive to Mt. Rushmore, and a great park with lots of wildlife.  I also like the Mammoth Site and Windcave.  In the badlands there is the Minuteman Missile National Monument near Wall that was good for me being an old missleman from my military days.  Devils Tower is a powerfully spiritual area for me.  A KOA by the main gate is the only nearby camping I know of.  When we were there a small town rodeo was going on by the entrance that was fun, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind played outside every night unless it rained. 

Another site to consider is the Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana.  A fire several years ago cleared brush and prompted surface collection of battle artifacts and re-interpretation of the battle.  Now there is also a monument to fallen Indians across the road from the 9th Cav monument.  I felt it was well worth the visit.  We camped in a little private campground in the nearest town.  I can't recall the town or the campground name.  It was by a river and quiet but run down.

We'll be coming from Lewis and Clark Caverns, MT. Mt. Rushmore doesn't take reservations. Did find Keyhole State Park - http://wyoparks.state.wy.us/Site/SiteInfo.aspx?siteID=10
