I looked at a 179 before getting my 178. I will say from the outside it looks kind of funny. Like they stretched it too much and there weren't enough windows. The kitchen was a great improvement. The dining area was OK and the storage closet and bed locations were good. I didn't like how the door opened up and hit the fender on the tire. A good wind could easily catch the door and slam into the fender and cause damage. yes everything is still ready to use. your slideout does not need to be out.

I might add to Mark's reply that the shower pan extends into that space, too. But, that is pretty obvious.

Thanks for the responses on the bath door. I didn't realize the plumbing wasn't below the trailer.

The door makes sense now, and given that its not the same "step" height is different on both sides I'd agree it doesn't seem like it'd be an issue. Hoping we can see for ourselves next month.

They all have this style of shower setup. The Pods are to low, and to small, for the plumbing to be below the trailer. Welcome Dave, From floor to doorsill 13 1/2", from doorsill to shower floor 6 1/2". We have not found it to be a problem.

I don't know if it is the same in a 179 as in our 177, and for that matter I haven't measured ours. My wife and I are considering an R-Pod to replace our current family trailer (as the kids age out of the house we could definitely use something smaller).

We're hoping to see them at the Atlantic City RV show next month, but one question I had was the entry to the bathroom.

I noticed in the pictures of the 179 (and then saw on the 178) that the bath door doesn't come down to floor level. I assume this is to provide more of a "stall" for the shower, but how have owners found it to be stepping over it to use the bathroom?

How high does it come up from the floor? It's tough to tell from the pictures.

I guess it might only be an issue for those middle of the night trips...

I would think that the solar panels are of the newer design that uses a wider spectrum of light, if they are anything like the solar cells in the flashlights that I have they charge very well even in the shade. My solar flashlights will even charge in the light on an incandescent bulb where old solar cells will not. For that price you could build a larger home-built system. Anyone that wants to look into it should visit the Wind Sun forum, the people there have thousands of man-years of experience building and operating solar systems. Well... I like ohm's law as much as anybody, but you are figuring on 12v output from the charge controller, and it won't be.. it will be as high as 16v when the batteries are down enough to need a bulk charge, then dropping into the high 13's and then high 12s as needed. (based on how my brother's system works) I am not sure the 80 watt panel is designed to fully top off the batteries daily, it can in best conditions.. but we don't see those everyday.. But.. if it can top off any percentage at all, it can extend your stay.. will also depend greatly on your usage.. as long as we don't run the heater all night, my guess is the 80 watt would keep you us and running a long time. Spring and fall, when you might only need the heater to get yourself moving in the morning, same thing I would guess. But that is part of why I would go with the 120watt panels, to be a little more sure..

BTW, the quoted price I heard for the panels from my dealer was "around" $350..

I guess I still have some doubt about the ability of an 80 watt system to do a very satisfying job of recharging batteries. Max output according to Ohm's law is just a bit over 5 amps. My charger is over 20 amps output when it is fast charging a battery. I think an 80 watt system will take quite a while to charge the battery, and the output will be less on cloudy days and when trees etc. are involved. The system FR is pushing is the 80 watt. Do you run dual or single batteries? The quickest/easiest way to double your boon docking range is dual batteries. If you still find yourself short on battery life, some form of electric generation is needed.. If you run dual batteries like we do, the 120watt system is the answer IMHO.

And yes, the 12v system is fully available while charging, just as it is when the converter is charging the batteries. If you look down at the bottom of the products pages, you can find the interface connector and socket just like FR is using..

Furpod- what size would you suggest? We don't do a lot of of the grid camping, but with the kids the batteries goes pretty quick. I read some, but can you use the battery while hooked up or is this strictly for recharging? Been wondering if a 179 will be at any of the up and coming retail shows near you? Ponder no longer Podders, as the 179 is appearing at several "RETAIL" shows near you, as well as dealer lots afterwards. In some cases you might even bump into a wonderful Forest River Superstar in person!!! Ask for autographs folks, I know for a fact that she carries 8x10 glossies in her purse!!!

The next location the 179 will be showcased is in Green Bay Wisconsin at the WBAY 51st Annual Camping and RV show 1/16/14 - 1/19/14 (Quietwoods RV)

Morgan Hill, California has a show in mid/late January and will be the "1st" hosting of a Hood River Edition 179 (Pan Pacific) is the dealer!

Charleston, West Virginia has a show and will have one the first weekend of February (Setzer's RV)

The Mid America RV show in Kansas City Missouri January 16-19th (Beacon RV) (will not have their 179 at this show, it will sadly not be offline in time, but meet the dealer and maybe our Forest River celebrity at this show!!! The only way to know for sure is to have your trailer loaded and your TV as you would for camping and if you use a WDH have that in place and hitched to your tow vehicle and have it weighed. They are not changing the axle on the Rpods.

Unless you load over the cargo capacity you will not reach the 3500# that they are designed to handle.

Is the 3500 axle adequate for their heavier trailers? I would assume the engineers know what they are doing. I thought I read here that Forest River/R Pods were geting a stronger ( if that is the correct word) axle for their newer production models?

New confirmed dry weight that will be going in the brochure is 2630#

Hitch weight 285#

Dry weight from factory is about 2800# only slightly heavier than the previous heaviest Rpod model.

Kristin is currently swamped beyond belief I can verify. She is at all the dealer shows. She sent me all the info and pics on the 179 earlier this week before she announced it from the RVIA show here. I will check with her next time I speak with her about the axle, but she did not make a note of it to me which I think she would have if it had changed. And since it is only slightly heavier than the 181g I do not think they changed the axle. But I will verify.

What I have read about the Forest River Vibes which is similar in weight , size , and design is that Forest River is changing the Vibe 6500 series from a 3,500 lb. axle to a 4,400 lb. axle. Perhaps the new 20 foot r-pods too will have the 4,400 lb. axle in time.
