I agree with David - the (interior) bathroom walls are wood studs.  Just screw into them.  I'd probably choose to mount a grab bar a couple inches below the shower taps.

    I think you could find a wood stud in the bathroom wall to secure wood screws that would be strong enough for a handle. That may depend on your weight if you are a heavy person perhaps over 300 lbs. wood screws may not be strong enough. We figured that....REALLY need info on how to bolt it on...what to do with the screws when they come out the other side, into the hallway across from the refrigerator? Can we just screw/bolt it on the wall....or would a block of wood on the outside wall provide enough support?

I own a Medical Equipment Company. The trend is the "suction" type mounts. The bath area is one of the most dangerous places.    There are many grab bars to chose from and there are studs in the bath walls to mount them to. I may have seen ways to raise the toilet seat but not sure where perhaps is was camping world. I understand your pain, I too have sore knees.
