We camped outside of Gettysburg about three years ago, at Gettysburg Campground. Nice place. Lots of shade. Built in pool. We hired a state licensed tour guide from the visitors center to drive my jeep & take us around the battlefield. It was a great time & somebody else is driving. He asked what state we were from & then started the tour where the 4th Ohio was lined up on the first day. He took us through the battle, day-to-day. It was a very rewarding experience. The best tour that I've ever taken. Also be sure to visit "Sunset Ice Cream"" in Gettysburg. Some of the best homemade ice cream, bar none. The Ghost Walk is fun for youngsters. President Isenhour's farm is next door to the battlefield. David, Did you stay AT Ft Wilkerson?? That's on our itinerary for next years camping! Two weeks in the UP, starting there, heading over to Marquette, Picture Rock and then down to Door County to stay at my sisters for a couple of days. Keep going back and forth between the camping there and at Lake Fannyhoo. SOOOOOO looking forward to it!!
 
And if you're willing to "pop" over to Wisconsin, I can't begin to tell you how nice the Apostle Islands are by Bayfield. A national park but Madeline Island is commercial so you can take a ferry with your camper over there and stay at Big Bay State Park. AWESOME!!

We really enjoy Harrisville State Park south of Alpenaand Lakeport State Park (North of Port Huron). A couple years ago we spent 10 days in the UP, 3 nights at Indian Lake State Park, 3 nights at Straits SP, and 3 nights at Taquanamah (sp?) Falls SP. Was in mid June and the bugs were unbelievable. Now we only go north in the fall! Copper Falls Wis State Park is getting close to our back yard.  It's about 70 miles east and a little south of us. We had been to Copper Falls many years ago to look at the spring snow melt but have not camped there.  It's one of those, "it's so close we will do it some other time" and then we never get there. We're hoping the Pod fixes some of those dilemmas.  A retired friend from work who camps keeps telling us to line up a weekend next summer. They love Copper Falls, they've been there several times.

We did the Boston, Pa Freedom Trail many moons ago with our kids.  The highlight was when we were at Gettysburg.  You used to be able to hire a state licensed historian, that rode in your car, for about an hour or two, stopping at each of the battle fields.  He recounted anecdotes of each of the battles and stories taken from the diaries of the combatants.  Made the history come alive like nothing else.  My wife is a retired 8th grade history teacher and we learned a great deal.  Can't suggest that highly enough.  Safe Travels.

I'm about 1 hour from Gettysburg, and 40 minutes from Baltimore if you want to crash in my driveway for a night or two.  30 amp outlet and water from the driveway, sewer connection for dumping if you back it onto the side yard.

Some of our favorites:

State parks in lower MI: Black Lake, Interlochen, Ludington, Tawas, Hartwick Pines, Higgins Lake. 
County parks in lower MI: Lighthouse Park in Pt. Hope, Caseville Park in Caseville.
Private parks in lower MI: Northern Exposure in Mesick.

State parks in the UP: Porcupine Mountains, Indian Lake.
Private parks in the UP: Lake Fanny Hooe Resort in Copper Harbor.

We are willing to spend. The rpod gives us the ability to explore to country without having to use hotels. Much easier to see what we want.
The first big trip will be along the East coast. We are taking the kids to see Boston and follow the Independence and Civil war sites as far as we can. The constraint is time, so this may take a couple of trips!!

Well....I suppose nobody's perfect. LOL 
 
But, if you're willing to spend some money on gasoline and go out of State, the world is your oyster.  I enjoy the National Parks and there are lots of "gems" in the various State Parks systems.  Just pick a direction you want to go and somone here has either been there and/or knows something about it.

I spent a week (Sept. 07 - 14) up that direction.  The weather was great - low to mid 70's during the day and high 50's- low 60's at night.  I spent 2 nights at Straits State Park/Mackinac Bridge
 
 
From there, I went to Porcupine Mountains State Park (the "Porkies", as mentioned.
 
 
This is "Lake of the Clouds", in the Porkies
 
 
While there, I ventured up to Copper Harbor State Park/ Ft. Wilkins to check things out for a potential next camping trip.  (Lake Superior, below)
 
 
Then, it was on to Copper Falls State Park in Wisconsin
 
 
 
Whoever designed this campground must have been a camper.  It is one of the nicest ones I stayed at.  I don't think there is a bad site in the place.
 
 
I recommend both States.  The only thing that baffles me is - why the folks in Michigan and Wisconsin don't brag more about their States.....they certainly have every right! Smile

Where in Mich are you?  The week before Labor Day we spent three nights at Union Bay Campground in the Porkies. (western end of the UP) We had a good time for our first time out but it was way too hot, 95 degrees. Porkies would be a long haul if you're from southern Mich.
