Just outside of San Antonio is Castroville.  The original stage stop is still there and probably more old homes than any place of equal size.  The town was settled by Alsaceations from Germany.  There is a fantastic German restaurant there as well as a very good French one.  I don't remember the names though.  The people in Alsace shipped a 1500's house to Castroville and it is open to the public.

There is also a very good campground at the city park.  The park is bordered by a small river.

I can't help with camping information, but I think Austin and surrounding areas are great,  A couple of "must sees" in the Austin area are Luchenbach, and the LBJ ranch.

Luchenbach is more than a country song.  It is a tiny town with a small country store/post office that sells beer and has picnic tables under live oak trees.  Nearly any afternoon there will be someone playing a guitar, banjo, washboard or something and people sit under the trees and listen.  Time stands still.

The LBJ ranch is for guys like me that recall the former president.  The property is much like it was when he lived there, and he is buried on the grounds.

Hello

We just moved to San Antonio and got the household settled.  Getting ready to go on first local trip and looking for suggestions.  Some of the Areas that sound interesting: Canyon Lake, Austin, Hill Country and nearby beaches (Port Aransas/Corpus Christi).  Anyone with thoughts or experience in the local area?
