Pets are allowed in all Ontario provincial parks.  However, they aren't allowed on beaches, in buildings (including cabins and yurts), and in campground loops designated "pet free" (note: only specific loops are pet free, the majority of loops in every provincial park campground are not restricted).  There are rare trails that are pet free; Mizzy Lake in Algonquin is the only dog-restricted trail that comes to mind at the moment.  Pets also aren't allowed on park-owned watercraft (e.g. the Mugwump ferry at Bon Echo) or park-owned canoe/kayak rentals.  Many outfitters who partner with Ontario Parks (e.g. Algonquin Outfitters) do allow pets in their rentals - but call ahead and ask first.

Here are the current rules and regulations for pets with respect to cabins and lodges within the park.

Pets (including Dogs) in Algonquin Park

Bringing a pet to Algonquin Park can be an enjoyable experience, but pet owners must follow specific pet related rules to ensure a positive experience for all Park visitors (including your pet). In general, leashed pets are allowed in all areas of Algonquin Park, with the exception of pet free areas listed below. Service dogs assisting disable persons are permitted in all public areas, including buildings.

Pet Free Areas in Algonquin Park

Pets, including dogs, are not permitted in the following areas of Algonquin Park:

  • All Park buildings
  • All campsites with Ranger Cabins or Yurts
  • Designated swimming areas or on beaches
  • Radio/pet frees areas of:
  • Mizzy Lake Trail
  • Some special events and interpretive programs, such as Public Wolf Howls. See the specific program description in the Events Calendar for details.
  • Other areas posted with "no pet/dog signage"

Designated Pet Exercise Areas

Leashed pet recreation areas are available at the following locations:

  • West Gate
  • East Gate
  • Canisbay Campground
  • Lake of Two Rivers Campground
  • Rock Lake and Coon Lake Campgrounds near the Booth's Rock Trail entrance

Thanks for the informative posts of several members and it's good to know that pets are allowed in Algonquin park. Last summer I visited the park staying in Algonquin park pine cabin known as Killarney lodge and we were not aware of the fact that pets are allowed inside the park. I am not sure about the fact that whether pets re allowed inside the cabins or lodges. Just to add to that, dogs must be restrained by a leash of no more than 2 metres/6 feet (including while on your campsite) and they cannot be left unattended.  Dogs also must not make excessive noise at any time - you may be evicted.

Rabies shots must be up-to-date; rabies tags are required, but unlike some US parks, veterinarian certificates aren't required at the park.  And, for those visiting Ontario, pitbulls (including mixed breeds) are strictly banned from the province.

Finally, if your dog does get lost, call the park staff immediately.  They'll keep an eye out, plus fellow campers do tend to call in stray dog sightings, so staff are usually the best source of information.

Pets are allowed on campgrounds at all Ontario provincial parks, except for designated areas in four Algonquin Park campgrounds: Achray, Canisbay, Mew Lake and Pog Lake.

There are limitations at the Awenda, Balsam Lake, Pinery and Voyageur campgrounds.

Pets are not permitted on beaches, other swimming areas or roofed accommodation sites like yurts, cabins or change rooms, and they must be on a leash 6 feet long or shorter. You must pick up and dispose of your dog’s waste in the garbage.  Pets are not permitted to make excessive noise, disturb others or wildlife.

Twelve Ontario campgrounds have exercise and beach areas (B, E) for pets. There are many other campgrounds within Ontario's provincial parks that feature either an exercise area (E) or a beach (B) for your dogs. While the following list is believed to be accurate as of August 1, 2013, you should check with the particular Provincial Park that you wish to visit and to ensure that they also accept RVs of your length:
