Lift relief valve slowly, probably get a little water or spray out it.     <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="https://www.rpod-owners.com/member_profile.asp?PF=8731" rel="nofollow">JR</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 3113<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 12 Dec 2021 at 8:56am<br /><br />I think you have found the only way to clean the tank out but I might suggest that you remove both the anode rod and the pressure relief valve and then you can put the pressurized water from the hose into the relief valve opening of the HW tank while the crud and water is coming out of the anode rod opening.&nbsp; While the water is coming out of the anode rod opening you also can use a screw driver to help get the big chunks out.&nbsp; This works well for me.&nbsp; Hope it helps once a year.]]>

You could try threading in a hose to the pressure relief valve and flushing it through that. Then the bottom opening would be free to let the water and debris flow out unimpeded. I have not checked to see whether the end of the pressure relief valve is threaded though.]]>

I made a skinny pipe attachment for my garden hose and it took over a half hour to get it clean. I cleaned out the remaining Teflon tape visible in the back of the anode rod fitting. It could come loose and float around in the hot water system until it got caught up in a filter or valve somewhere. If that is a concern&nbsp;food grade anti seize paste on threaded fittings like this avoids use of Teflon tape.<div>Have a great weekend.</div>]]>

I had another trailer with a water heater and replaced the anode after two years. I have noticed that the anode usually has some magnesium loss where the magnesium touches the rod 'bolt head'.  I believe that the acidity of the water that is in your tank makes a big difference in rod loss.  Last year I found much more rod loss than this year...camped in different parts of the US.<br />I usually replace the rod before all of the magnesium is gone. Years ago I left a rod in and the end of the rod broke off in the tank because the central wire was the only thing holding the remaining magnesium to the bolt head and the wire broke.]]>
