Author: Podsible Dream
Subject: 3057
Posted: 30 Nov 2012 at 11:55pm

Hi, everyone. Since we got power back I have been very busy as the Presbytery of Monmouth (NJ) Diaster Recovery Coordinator. The presbytery is a Presbyterian Church political group which includes a number of local churches generally in a geographical area. Monmouth includes the counties in NJ in the northeast shore quadrant- from just north of Atlantic City to Sandy hook, in to Perth Ambay and down the turnpike towards south of Trenton to Mt Holly then over to the coast. So all the shore areas you saw on TV are in the area. The national Presbyterian Disaster Assistance organization works thru the presbyteries to provide long term recovery aid to the communities affected. So after I toured the shore areas with some of the PDA response team on the Friday and Saturday following Sandy, I was asked to lead the presbytery recovery team. We have been busy meeting with other volunteer organizations at the local, county and state levels, and communicating with all the churches around the country that have offered people, money and stuff to aid our people. The damage on the shore is devastating. From the outside it doesn't look bad in a lot of places (except the barrier islands that got washed away) but then you realize that blocks and blocks of homes, stores, churches and other buildings had sea water up to a couple of feet deep in the first floors, and you start to understand the extent of the damages. Recovery will be a long time coming. Fortunately, PDA is a long term recovery organization, so we will be around for a long time offering aid- from rebuilding to caregiving.
In any event, it has been busy month, so we haven't been contributing much. The Free Spirit has been winterized and covered with the camouflage cover. Unfortunately, our church annual meeting is the Sunday of the winter camp, so we can't make it. We will try to get out if there is a warm spell, tho. Still have to get the light upgrade... The to do list has gotten even longer since retirement....
Other than all that, we are all doing well.

Walt
Had a generator for the last five days- on loan from my car mechanic who got his power back sooner. So we had heat after I wired it into the steam boiler control line, and some lights on extension cords but no TV, Internet or phone without real electric. Then it turned out the backup battery on the FIOS box fried the incoming network box so that had to be replaced. Now we are back to standard communication levels.

I spent several days with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance advance team visiting the shore communities hit by Sandy- too much destruction.... Then I ended up recruited to be the Presbytery Recovery Coordinator for our area of NJ north of Atlantic City. It will be a long term process to get the life of these towns and communities back to a sense of "normal", whatever that may end up being.

I hope all our neighbors fared well and are back to their regular lifestyles without lingering after effects.

Walt

Techntrek, I think you get the award for being the most prepared! We are in upstate NY so our prep was just making sure we had food and water, and getting all potential dead limbs down in surrounding trees and having enough gas for our generator. Stay safe out there!
