I previously owned a large RV. I was generally restricted to commercial campgrounds because many public NF/NP/SP campgrounds have length restrictions. After many trips, I found that most scenic locations did not have a KOA, etc., so I had to haul a tow-behind just to go from the campground to the places I wanted to see. I traded in the RV for my Pod and never regretted it. It is short enough to fit in any public campground and also fits in out of the way non-campgrounds. Some National Forests will allow you to park/camp in areas where there are no campsites.
Some people need the conveniences of a commercial campground, but I don't need a heated swimming pool, grocery store, etc. when I go camping. In fact, just the opposite.
The silly rules are truly a detriment, though. Like traveling with a cat means getting stuck in the "pets"area with barking canines. Not a pleasant place for a cat! Plus often more costly. Also have to be careful with adult beverages!

Here is how I see it so far...

Pros
SP - more space, more peace, more nature and scenery, less money!
Private - cable is nice (agree with Leo B), no trouble with availability thus far, can get a space on short notice

Cons
SP - Must schedule several weeks ahead of time (or at least in Central Texas that has been the case)
Private - closer proximity to neighbors, some 'silly' rules

Overall I'd give it to SP's on the basis of cost, nature, and space. The main reason we purchased the POD was our desire to check out all the Texas State Parks on weekends. Don't have enough vacation time to take Howdy Pod'ner out of Texas yet, although I enjoy hearing the stories of other places Pods have been.
The have a set standard that they make all the parks live up to. Presently we are at the KOA on Cape Hatteras and think we have found a piece of heaven!!
We have been to several privately owned ones and don't feel they match the KOA's. We are going to start hitting some of the Stae Parks in Vermont and NH, but really like the full hook-ups and I must admit it.....the Cable tv.
