I had the same reaction at first, but then realized since they had hookups it was no different than running it in AC mode.  He wasn't really running it off of "battery", but rather from the converter. 
 
With no hookups you are absolutely correct, though.  It would kill the battery in just a few hours.

If you look, at least in our 177, 2 extra slots in the fuse box...

and yes, the porch light is on the 12v circuit..

and run the fridge on 12v LAST.. it will run a LONG time on gas. The "burner" is no bigger than a pilot light.

We left the house with Eddy our R177 in tow on our way to Kinder La. For a few days...along the way we went through several hours of extremely heavy rains.  To shorten the story a little, the GFI for the outlets triped and would not reset.  This killed the porch light, all the outlets in the trailer and AC to the refrigerator.   Ouch

The fridge didn't worry me too much as it would still run off the battery so the food wasn't an issue.
But killing my coffee pot didn't make me a happy camper.   Cry

The suggestion?  Put the outside power outlets on a separate GFI circuit.  Big smile
The cost for this fix would be minimal.
