Well I guess my next question would be    ...can the spare tire handle one of those bike racks that fit over the assembly? I'm aware of the probs with extra weight in the rear but that sort of arrangement wouldn' really stick out that far (talking 2 bikes maximum)

PaddyMorris:  I built the bike.  Its a 2004 Dyno Roadster, a stretched cruiser.  Its 7' 10" long.  It now has saddle bags and in the process of putting an unused 1952 Monark fork on her.  It gets between 100 and 150MPG!

It's an 1 1/4" receiver at the back of the pod, and if you use the FR bike rack you can't mount the spare tire there. Sorry Techntrek...I agree with PaddyMorris.  If memory serves, this was what was on my 2010 RP173.
Definately not a 2''.

As far as I know the receiver on the 'pod is a standard 2" receiver, but it has a weight limit of I believe 150 pounds.  Don't quote me on that.  I agree that you don't want to put your bikes back there along with the tire, or one of those cargo trays.  Ignoring the possible 150 pound limit, its a lot of mass that will give you a pendulum effect that will contribute to sway.  And those trays stick out quite a bit which will give it even more momentum.
 
Considering issues with turning clearance if you put bikes between the TV and 'pod, and problems getting to stuff in the back of a TV if you hang them off the back of your TV, I've decided that when the time comes (soon), I'm going to have a second 2" receiver mounted on the front of my TV.  Then I can put any receiver-style bike rack up there or one of those cargo trays.  I've heard of people also using this to park their campers in tight spots - easier to see and more maneuverable when its hitched up to the front of your TV.

I'm familiar with this type of trailer hitch "tray/rack" and thought that might be an option for thenrear of the R-pod, since (if I understand correctly), there is a conventional hitch receiver back there. Do you know off-hand if that is true and   ...is it a 2" receiver?

Just so I understand correctly    ...you have the actual R-Pod bike rack option and you have it hooked up to the hitch bar near the ball on your tow vehicle?

I am trying to find a way to keep the spare tire mounted on the rear of the pod and put 2 bikes back there too.

They (Thule and Yakima) make bike racks that fit over the actual spare tire, instead of being part of a bar assembly that plugs into a hitch receiver. So I guess my next question would be      ...can the R-Pod spare tire assembly handle the weight of "wheel mount" rack and 2 bikes ?

For us the bike rack is at the front, over the propane tank
 
They say that it'll "swing" less than if it's installed at the rear.
 
It works well for our 2 bikes

Can't tell from the brochure    ...so I thought I'd check with the group.

It's my understanding that the spare tire assembly fits into a standard trailer hitch on the R-Pod.

It"s also my understanding that the bike rack assembly works with then trailer hitch. In other words, does the bike rack fit "over" the hitch tongue of the spare    ...or is it an "either/or" situation.

I know that Thule and Yakima make bike rack assemblies that fit "over" the tongue so that you can use a standard hitch ball and the bike rack at the same time.

My question is    ...can they both be used at the same time on the R-Pod ? - - and is it a 2" hitch receiver?
