Take what you mentioned about the heat and imagine being in/near an inferno, wearing very heavy gear and working very hard. Dead  I hope they are relieving the boys & girls frequently.

I had 98.5* under my car port just little while ago.  The heat index is 108*.  Thursday, Friday and Saturday we have a 60% chance of rain.  If it goes the way it has been going the rain will hit Jacksonville and not us.  But at least someone will have gotten it.

The big problem is the lightening strikes.  We have had some storms without rain...just lightening and winds.  That causes a lot of fires.  The last storm had 9,000 strikes!  That is the problem of living in the lightening capital of the USA.  We are ranked 3rd. in the world also.

I just looked at the map, and it's amazing how much of the state is covered by forest fires.  It truly is feast or famine as we had tornado warnings here last night with hurricane force winds.  For a short while it reminded me of the time when I was in Key West with a hurricane churning out in the Dry Tortugas with the trees bending sideways and the torrential rains and lightning.

In the town I live in we have had over 6" of rain this month with it looking like more is on the way.  The farmer's field behind my house is turning into a lake, and I'll be willing to bet that a portion of his soybean crop is ruined and can't be replanted.  One of the janitors that works at the university that I do was telling me that a good portion of his corn crop is ruined as well.  


 The body of water is not the field--that is a pond, but you can see a lighter area toward the center of the photo is where the field is under water.

I did a quick check on this and they are pretty much running it right out of the "play book".  The Governor has issued a disaster declaration.  In this, he appointed the State Emergency Mgmt Director the "main dude" to command/coordinate the response.  He also gave the Director virtually the full resources of the State and a "blank check" to cover the expenses.  The Director has the authority to summon the National Guard, DOT, Red Cross...anything.  I didn't see anything where he/she had done this, however, I just quickly skimmed things. 
 
At any rate, if the State Director should determine assistance from outside of the State is needed, it would likely go thru the FEMA process.

I'll watch for your updates.  I would need a contact ie: County Emergency Coordinator or whoever is commanding/coordinating the response.  They would no doubt want to see my certifications and I would want some sort of authoriztion from them to be there, on the scene, assisting, and who to report to.
 
I'd be happy to help with my training and experience but, there are lots of people closer than me (here in Indiana) who could help them with food/water.

My heart goes out to their poor families. We too, last a man firefighting this spring when his water-carrying helicopter crashed into the lake when he was picking up.

I know that they have gotten some volunteer firemen.  I "think" they are asking for firemen also.  The problem is they have to cover the fire houses and these fire fighters are working with next to no sleep/rest in 95* to 100* heat.  Yesterday the heat index was 105*.  Plus the heat from the fire.  I almost forgot about the humidity.  It is way up there!

There was a crawl across the TV screen just now that there is a heavy smoke warning for southeast Georgia and northeast Florida until 4PM.

UPDATE: 2 firefighters were caught in the fire and died.  Both had been with the US Forest Service as firemen for 10 years.  Two others were also hospitalized.

The news just said there were 3,574 fires so far this year in the state. 

Here in Saint Johns county we just went up to 27 fires right now.  Fire departments are running out of food and water and are asking for help from the people.  As of tonight they have enough food for 3 more meals.  They are also asking for volunteers to drive fire truck, serve and prepare food.  Anything to free up firemen to fight fires.

Click on Current Wildfires for an up to date map showing the fires.  I have to put the map at 100% or it won't show up.  Now I see the fire numbers are up to 440 too.

Sounds a lot like mid-west, I've read that many of those states are under fire warnings.  I hope all is well in a few weeks for the final shuttle launch.  I'll be coming down on the 7th.

We have been fortunate here in the Rio Grande Valley.  Even though we haven't had any measurable rain since March, and have had temps in the upper 90's with plenty of wind.  We haven't had anything major yet.  Hoping for rain later this week.  Hopefully, no on the weekend as I plan on taking the Pod out.

With all the heat and no rain Florida is on fire.  As of this morning there are 423 fires around the state.  The eastern shore line counties are being hit the most.  Here in Saint Johns county we have 25 fires.  Most are being caused by lighting strikes.

The fire in the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia is more than 200,000 acres and crossed into Florida.  It is within 50 miles of Jacksonville.  The ash is falling in Jacksonville making parked cars look like they are covered in snow.

If anyone is thinking of coming down here they should check on the smoke level first.
