That is great.  We will be there from 5/31 until 6/5.  We won't arrive until late on Tuesday night as I work until  7pm.  We should try to get together for a dinner or something while we are there.  I like the Hoover camp hike down to the river and I am sure you will enjoy the tour.  As we will have a dog with us, we won't be able to take the bus down.  If you get a chance to walk upstream a little from the camp, the river has some nice pools to cool off in.   Have you ever had a chance to have dinner in the bar in the basement of the lodge?   They have had some interesting local entertainment in the past. 
 
Wow, I guess it is time for me to start planning what hikes we are going on.   We will be at F198.  I suspect that somehow we will be able to pick each other's campsite out. LOL

Hey Brin, I just booked site E189 from 5/31 until 6/3. I'm not 100 percent sure we will make it but it is looking good.
I also reserved a place for my husband and I on the Rapidan Camp tour for Wednesday 6/1 at 1:30.  I have always wanted to see the camp but haven't been up to hiking, so this is perfect for us.

Ok, I'll be the 1st no hook-ups undeveloped fool LOL. Technically I still haven't camped in a camper, never mind an R-POD. But that is soon to change and I'm looking forward to it. We will eventually be camping at camp grounds, but putting our pod on our property in Vt. would be considered primative I think. though we will have running water, so maybe that's not really primative Smile. I think each level from primative to commercial has their own merits. Thanks, Leaflin!  You even included a "bear sighting" Smile.  The campsite pictured looks just fine with me.  You'd be hard pressed to do that good at Loft Mountain, IMHO. 
 
Loft Mountain is OK.  There is a camp store, pay showers and laundry on site.  Also, there is a small restaurant/fuel station right at the entrance, on Skyline Drive.  I had intended to visit Shenandoah last fall after leaving the Smokys.  However, this would have kept me in a strong storm front so, I decided to just stay put at the Smokys.
 
Back in 2007, I camped at the Smokys and then drove the entire Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive.  I would recommend this trip heartily to all...it's a beautiful drive.  Give yourself at least 3 days to take it in and fuel up when you can; opportunities are not abundant.  The speed limit is 35mph...LOL...maybe you could do that in a Ferrari!  However, you won't want to.  This is one of those times where the trip is probably as much fun as the destination.

Gosh, Leaflin those pictures are making me homesick.  I grew up in Rappahannock County and practically lived on the Drive and Old Rag when I was a teenager.   I have pictures of bear too from the park but I think your picture is much better.   I love the deer in the campground.   The neighbor skunk was a new addition Tongue.  
I hope you had your wheel chocks set or if the pod rolled backwards it would have gone off the mountain.   Remind me to tell you the story sometime on the first time we tried to unhook up there and didn't put the chocks down first (newbiesDisapprove) and I thought our Pod might roll off.

David, if you are looking for a site near the Appalachian Trail all of the outer E loop sites back onto it.

This is site E 185 with the R-Pod. The Appalachian Trail is right at the back where the site drops off.

Last time we were up there we came across a coyote but I was too scared to move let alone take a picture.
My Mum and Dad were caretakers for a section of the Appalachian Trail for many years.

Judging by the pictures of Big Meadows,  it looks better than Loft Mountain.  I've stayed in the low "A" numbered sites on the main road in.  Some have some good views and are close to the AT.  Most of the sites are "pull thru - half circles", so they are easy to get in/out of.  However, you'll have the sun in your eyes in the evening.  The more rustic sites seem to be in the "generator free" F & G loops.  On the southern end of the campground....not many live trees/shade.
Ticks......ugh!  I hate pulling those things out! (on my dog) Angry  It sounds like I should put Big Meadows down for my next trip to Shenandoah. 
I always have a lot of fun chasing "bear sightings".  Shenandoah......cool.

I have only stayed at Big Meadows too.  I love the area around the campground to walk around in the evening after we get back from a hike.  The shower is close enough to walk to.   They have the lodge open after mid May and we often go there for a sandwich and some "entertainment" in the evenings. 
Loft Mountain looks good and I would like to try it sometime.   Big Meadows is closer so we have always just stopped there.  
Do you have a site number that you recommend at Loft Mountain?
If you are tent camping, I would suggest site 37 (if you don't mind carrying your stuff to your site)  it is the furtherest one into the woods and most secluded.  It does have a bear box to store your stuff.

Big Meadows is my favorite on Skyline. It was the first place we ever camped almost 40 years ago. There is a lot to do there and walking the Meadow is so serene.
Loft Mountain has had problems with ticks the last few years so we haven't camped there recently.
Lewis Mountain is small and close together, I really don't like it that much.
They have closed  half of Mathews Arm, it is ok but the closed part is very run over.
Panorama, though not a camp ground is closed now. We use to go up there for lunch.
 
My favorite is Lake Sherando which is off the Blue Ridge Parkway but close to Skyline Drive
(but don't tell anyone).

We are hoping to go to the beach that week but if we don't we may come up for the day. I haven't been to Camp Hoover in years and would love to see it again.
F198 is a great site but I didn't know that about the skunk!
I'm not sure about the dome.
There is a tree there and we had enough room for our awning with our last TT.
I'll find a pic for you.
I doubt they have added diesel.

This TT was almost twice as long as th R-Pod as well as wider. I think the dome would fit.
I'll see if I can find a pic with the R-Pod in it.

We will be there from 5/31 until 6/5 (leaving in am) at site F198.  It is a decent site but is situated fairly near a skunks home in the culvert.  So far he hasn't bothered us---maybe he will have moved on.    I like those sites on the edge by the AT.  It would be nice to wake up to that view. Can you put the dome up on that site.   We did have trouble with using it on a different site due to a tree being in the way.  I don't get reliable reception for the phone up there so it is difficult to contact us easily but I am sure we would be easy to spot.    Do you know if they have any diesel pumps up there yet? My views are similar to David's: I prefer the rustic campsites found in Provincial and National Parks.

To tell the truth, the only real need (as in must have) I see for electric hookups is to run the A/C at night.  Everything else can run on battery or simply not be used at all.  Fortunately, 'round here, A/C is only needed at night 4-5 times a year.  And, if we head north, A/C really isn't needed at all; I can't remember a single time that we've ever turned on the A/C at night in Algonquin.

In the past, we tended to book sites with electric hookups.  But, these sites do come at a premium cost and they tend to book up quickly.  They're also a bit RV-touristy, which is starting to grate on my nerves at bit.  This year, we're increasing our dry camping and are venturing to some new campgrounds which are less travelled by the RV crowd.  I'm looking forward to it.

Like David, we tend to do most of our camping in MI state parks, most of which are limited to electricity only on site. The MI state parks tend to have the primo locations and you can make reservations online.

Haven't tried any of the State or National Forest campgrounds yet, they have good locations too but are more primitive and usually first come first served. Pretty inexpensive too. Maybe this summer ...

Personally, my favorite camping is primative/developed in the National Parks.  However, with that said, I do most of my camping (say 80%) in developed with electricity.  Most all  of our State Parks are set up this way.  I will use the commercial campgrounds, as needed, for overnight stays while enroute to my destination.
 
I like the primative as it seems to be less heavily used and, though not always, the sites seem more spacious and spaced further apart.
