The BAL 'lower' arms provide the support for the upper part of the mechanism for raising the tire.
If the ground is soft the ground arms will try to sink and defeat the purpose of lifting the tire.
Pads beneath the arms will keep them from sinking if the ground is soft and the pad under the tire will allow you to remove the BAL if it has tried to sink.

All this talk about the Bal Leveler made me decide to order one. I was contacted by the company I ordered it that they were out of stock and would take 2 weeks to get them in. I hate to wait!

As far as the Bal sinking, wouldn't it be just as easy to put a plastic level pad under the tire only? If it sinks you could still get the Bal out if the tire was on the level pad. As I do not have mine yet, I don't know if this would work.

'Hodge-PODge' has a good suggestion about putting one or more plastic level pads under the BAL Level when setting up! The BAL has two round metal support pipe arms which fit fore and aft of the tire. If the ground is soft or gets muddy from rain, the pipe arms will slowly sink into the ground. Don't forget to put a pad under the tire also. I love using my BAL Leveler...but be warned that if the Leveler is set onto soft soil, the weight of the POD may cause the Leveler to sink slightly into the ground. When you go to lower the BAL, it may be difficult or impossible to pull the leveler out away from the tire. You won't be able to just slip the Leveler out from the tire. The Leveler arms fore and aft then will not allow you to pull away from the leveler. In this situation, I found that I had to jack the tire slightly higher and slip a plastic level pad under the tire. This keeps some weight off the BAL so that I can then slip the BAL out from the tire. I then drive the POD off of the pad.
If the camping surface is solid, the BAL is quite easy to remove.

I think the company's name is BAL; but it is a leveling device that fits under the low side tire and yo crank it up to level. This link shows one.

I use a BAL and it stores in the pass though (I have a 172)...I also carry a 6X6x18(?I'll have to measure to be sure) block of wood that I put in the tongue. Saves on cranking up and down.

Wood planks of all different sizes that I carry in a bin. I have had some of them from the pop-up camper. It works for me. Used the lynx blocks but purchased the Bal leveler this year. Only used it once but so far I like it. Especially since my corded drill I keep in the pod has enough torque to raise and lower it. Also like the fact that the drive on the Bal is the same size as my stabilizer jacks. I use Lynx blocks. I've had the same set for six years (used them on our old tent trailer too) and they're still going strong. I like how light they are, how compact they store and how sturdy they are.
