Last year we stopped at a campground northeast of Yellowstone.  Someone had handwritten in ink
on the campground bulletin board that a female Grizzly had ripped open their 5th wheeler access door and tore open their refrigerator door.  The sign said "good luck with dogs, kids, and ice cream containers"

I've slept in a tent in bear country many times, and never really had a problem. Generally if one is seen, it runs way before I can get the camera out, as up by Itasca Park in Minnesota last summer. I have to admit, however, when tent camping solo, it does seem like every little sound is a bear or a lion. lol. Confused 
 
Use common sense, don't leave food scraps around. I know in backpacking we do not leave our food bags or cannisters near where we sleep, nor do we eat near where we sleep. When in a car or RV,  I've never felt the need to do other than keep a really clean camp to be reasonably safe.

Since we live really close, perhaps we could get together some other time, as the calender permits. Parades are fun, Yellowstone is awesome. I've wondered how a pod would do against bears that can open locked cars Star.

 Sure would like to be part of a mini POD gathering here, but if all goes as planed we should be in Yellowstone for the Labor Day weekend. For the 4th of July weekend we are torn between going to southwestern Michigan with the POD or running our tractor in the local parade on the 4th. drdrew, I've got two grandkids at MU right now, and another that finished two years ago. Columbia is a nice town, lots of fun stuff going on like any university town.

There seem to be a lot of folks anxious to get out for their first outing in their new pods, I know we are really looking forward to it. Central and Southern Missouri  is beautiful, and we visit the area often. There are beautiful state parks, great hiking,  the KATY trail,  Lake of the Ozarks and much more.
 
Hawkpod, you were talking about possible times for a mini gathering, I'll send you an email with some possible dates that work for us, and we will see what happens. I think it would be fun!

While I would love to I currently live in KY and am a good 8 hours from KC. When Parsons closed I went back home to TX to complete my college and graduated from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene many many years ago. I'm showing my age. The school I did most of my undergrad work at, Graceland, in Lamoni, IA, played football against Parsons. I used to go to football games (as a spectator) there before the big change. Even though I went a couple of summers to Iowa State, I did my 4 years of grad work in Iowa City, so when they play each other, I am a Hawkeye! My brother still lives in Boone, so I go up once in a while.
 
It seems like we have a little bit of an Iowa club here. If any of you ever find yourselves coming down to KC, let me know, maybe we can get together somewhere.

While I am not from Iowa originally I did go to school there. Some of you may remember a little school in Fairfield called Parsons college before in became the Marharisi (SP) School. Doc Tom, thanks so much for all the fun ideas!  If you are from Boone, are you friends with Govenor Branstad?  We love both universities as long as they aren't playing each other.  Cry  My husband went to William Penn (Oscaloosa) and I am Buena Vista (Storm Lake).  Even though we live in Iowa, all my family is from Missouri, so we like traveling that direction. 
 
We bought a 177 also and it had to go right into winter storage.  We are so glad the snow is melting.  Going to Saylorville over Memorial weekend.  You have probably been there.  The lake is 24 miles long and there is a trail, so we are taking our bikes. 
 
We will be checking out your recommendations.  Hope to see you out there!

Hawkeye, I haven't had the R-pod long enough to use it. Bought it and put it directly into storage last December. I have camped the City area often (tent up to now) and like Smithville Lake (Clay County Parks and Rec, (north of KC) and Flemming Park/Lake Jacomo (east of the city). I live fairly close to Worlds of Fun, nice looking RV park, north, near Liberty, MO.
 
I am really looking forward to getting the 177 out soon and using it. Long trip in July planned (Colorado) and several long weekends before that to get acquainted with it. Probably a trip down to the KATY Trail with the bikes also. I usually go to the Roachport area there. I also love the state parks in SE Missouri, but they are 3-5 hours from here.
 
Some friends have recommended Pony Express RV Park (Maysville, MO), between Cameron and St. Joseph, MO as a nice place to spend a weekend. Website looks nice.
 
With a name like Hawkeye, you must have an Iowa connection. I grew up in Boone, and went to both Iowa State and the University of Iowa.

Camped at Lewis and Clark State Park the first weekend this last Nov. There were 3 other campers there that weekend. Nice place, all level sites, not far from Weston, MO. Just outside of Atchison,KS. and south of ST. Joe, north of Weston.

That storage is so cool.  I have seen it before when we went down to Royals and Chiefs games.  Could not ask for anything better than that!  Speaking of underground have you been to O'Malleys in Weston?  It is in an old underground prohibition brewery.  They have live Irish music on Friday and Saturday nights.  Wonder if they would let us leave our Hawkpod in the parking lot so we could crawl out and go right to bed after all the Irish toasts?  Love the Kansas City area!

Kansas City is blessed with many underground sites for storage that were once limestone quarrys. With the sometimes harsh winters, ice storms, high winds/tornados we experience from time to time, the caves are a secure, dry, temperature controlled, weather proof facility. $55/month on 12 month contract, 66/month for shorter time. Access is easy, basically daylight hours except Sunday, for other times, they will bring the r-pod out and leave it in a watchman guarded lot and can be picked up with personal PIN, anytime night or day. I guess I am lucky here. I live in Bowmanville Ontario and the regulations allow parking the trailer in my driveway. The only stipulation is that it has to be a side yard application which means that the driveway extends between the two houses to the back yard. No trailers are allowed to be parked in the driveway if it would be in front of the house.
