I had a rattling sound in my pump a while ago. I disassembled it and found a washer inside one of the chambers. I think it had not been assembled correctly and the washer was pinched in the housing. After a few years, it had finally vibrated loose. After I disassembled it and reassembled it correctly, it has operated properly since.

As for the problem at hand, I think there is a check-valve in the pump. It may be stuck. I don't have a pump schematic to say for sure though.

I realize I'm late to the party, but....I had the same problem with my pump yesterday when I tried to get it to suck antifreeze into the system. It just wasn't happening. The day before it had been working perfectly. On a hunch I disconnected both hoses from the pump, turned the pump on and could feel it sucking air when I put my hand over the opening. Hooked it back up and it worked great. Never tried to see if it blows air when dry. I would simply yank the old one out and replace. If you want to check the new one, simply hook 12v to it and stick the incoming water line part of the pump in a bucket of water, careful you might get wet unless you point the outgoing line away from you.

If the whole head, cheapest I can find is $80, which is more than the entire pump. If the motor is spinning.. a new "head" can be had on the big A.. Like $17 last time I looked. 9 screws and it's changed, pay attention to screw length, they are not all the same.

Yup, looks like I will yank the pump. Just to clarify everything, I thoroughly winterized everything last fall with rv antifreeze as I have been for 10+ years. This spring dewinterized the entire system and everything worked wonderfully. A few days ago when I decided to drain everything just to rinse everything out (and I actually ran the pump prior to and it worked fine). When I say drain everthing, I mean fresh water tank, hot water heater, low point drains, etc. When I refilled fresh tank to fill hot water tank and fill lines, the pump would not prime as usual. Prob just a coincidence of the pump malfunction. Could have had a little water left in it which froze up last winter, since you havent been using it. Probably it's toast, but it wouldn't hurt to take the pump apart, clean everything up and inspect,

then if you like what you see put it back together and bench test it with a suction line and a water jug. . Sometimes you get lucky, and at worst you learn something for the next time someone has a problem.

Not sure what you mean but if there is any air getting in due to a crack or a separation in/at the filter bowl, the pump is going to pump air, not water. New bowls are easy to find on Amazon. They come with a screen and a gasket. Real easy if that's what it is.

I had a small crack in the plastic crown on top of the pump that let air nix the suction. Replaced it and all worked well. Looking at the crack it looked more like a scratch. Good luck with your issue.

Just put the siphon hose in a jug of water you don't need to set the water heater bypass valves in winter mode. All you're trying to do is get the pump primed. For whatever reason it's not able to self prime by drawing water from the fwt. Jon, Try opening the siphon hose (as if you were winterizing with antifreeze) with a jug of water and see if it will suck up water; sounds like you have an air lock somewhere preventing the pump from charging the system. I had that happen once, why I cannot explain but tried this and it worked.

How long did you let the pump run? I know on ours the hot water tank has to fill before we start seeing water. We get some cold but we don't see any consistent pressure until the entire system is charged. That usually takes a few minutes. nope, no water anywhere...bummer! Antifreeze hose valve is in correct direction. Screen pump was perfectly clean/clear. No water anywhere? Did you check the screen on the pump? If you have one, have you checked the valve on the antifreeze hose to make sure the pump isn't sucking air from that?

I suppose you could have a clog on the water intake inside the tank. Not sure what you'd need to do about that. Maybe flush the tank a few times, using the tank drain on the bottom. Not the low point drains. I think it's a last resort, but you might have to unhook the intake hose at the pump and figure out a way to blow some air back into the tank from there. I'm sure there's check valve though, and I don't know where,

Havent used my rpod all summer due to various circumstances. I dewinterized early spring and all was good. Plan on getting back in tune here real quick for the fall season, but decided to redrain everything so everything is fresh. Filled up tank, fired up the pump and it doesnt seem to be pressurizing. It runs, but no air or water coming out of faucets. Double checked all my valves, cleaned the screen (nothing really there), and double checked everything again.
