In the motor home we always traveled with our cat. Now we travel with our 17 pound dog. We have a cat, but at 17 pounds, he requires a very large litter pan (has a dome top). Had to buy that style because he throws litter every where. He could never manage the rubbermaid dish pan of the previous cat of 6 pounds. Question is what facilities do you plan for the cat and where do you put it? We regularly camp with our cat, Tango.  She loves it.  When we pull out the RV in the spring, she parks herself on the step as if to say, "Don't even think about leaving me behind!"

Tip:  We put a plastic tub on the couch, covered with her favourite pillow, and it is the perfect height for her to look out the window or take a nap, or both.   Once, at one of our regular campgrounds, when our "usual" site was occupied, our usually shy feline strolled into the middle of the site, sat herself down and almost spoke, "Get the heck out of my site, you squatters!"

Travelled and camped with my male cat for about 10 years.
He always came when I called, whether at home or on the road. I won many campground bets. I would yell his name once, sit down and wait. Within a couple minutes Lucy would appear and hop into my lap. Rarely did I ever have to call twice. If I left him out at night, he could be found every morning under the hood of the car. In cold climates, finding a warm car engine is a cat survival technique.
He liked car trips, never had him on a leash. 
After the cat died, we got a Wheaton Terrier who would occaisionaly would turn around to see who was calling before she trotted off on unauthorized adventures. Most often, she interpreted 'come' as 'run'.

The first time I took my cat camping, I was tent camping in Lake Tahoe. It was also a 9-hour drive from home. My sisters warned that I would either lose him or break him. The cat was leash trained and I kept him on a 20' rope tied down. He would hunt june-bugs until 1am and then squeeze into the tent & snuggle in. When I got the R*Pod, I brought him inside and he settled into a corner cushion as if to say, "Well...when are we going?"  I plan on taking him on a short weekend trip sometime this summer. Our cat, Tango, has been camping with us for years in our larger camper.  (We cut a hole into the front pass-through where we store her litter box.)   We haven't taken her in our Pod.  She dislikes the drive, but loves the camping once we get there.

We trained her at home to be on a leash outside and we always kept her on a leash when camping, especially when she was younger and whenever we were in new campgrounds.    Over the years she has managed to wriggle out of her leash or sneak out of the camper on numerous occasions, and she has always managed to return to the camper, sometimes leaving "gifts" for us in the campsite (she also has learned to hunt while on the leash and has snagged numerous mice and voles).

My advice is to leash train your cat at home and then try a very short term trip with her not too far from home.  Be super cautious if you are visiting bear country, as a cat on a leash would be easy prey and be aware that a LOT of people camp with dogs and not all of them are considerate about keeping their dogs on a leash, so potential run-ins there.

In early spring, when the camper comes out, she sits on the outside step as if to say, "OK - I'm ready, let's get this show on the road and let's get camping."

Henry enjoys traveling with us and has logged thousands of miles in the car visiting relatives and vacations. We take him with us mainly because of his need for daily meds and he does seem to enjoy it and us him. His introduction to our new 178 was a big success.

The only problem is he uses sooo much fresh water when he flushes!! Confused

My spouse and I are wannabes for taking our two kittyboys along.  In fact, they are a major consideration as we proceed through our trailer selection process.  Providing for their needs and our comfort with them aboard is leading us to a larger trailer than we would otherwise need and strengthening our interest in an R Pod over a smaller teardrop or egg.  Our two champion litter kickers seem to need as much square footage (or is it "inchage") for their sandbox as we do.

If we do choose to purchase an R Pod, I claim the moniker "Purr Pod" unless someone else is using it already.

Blissful, last weekend it seemed that there were a lot of cats camping.  We always take our two, the Class C next to us had three, and the trailer next to that one had one.  I think that's the first time that has happened to us the entire year.

Desi loves being outside provided that he's leashed.  He knows that will be the only way he goes out, so he gets excited when he sees it.  Normally, he'll just walk around and investigate and then hop up on the picnic table to lay down next to me.  

Lucy, however, will only go outside to get her quotient of grass and then it's back inside the trailer.

Fortunately, for both, they hate the loud noise of diesel engines to the point that they will both run to the steps of the trailer.

I have 2 cats and they stay inside..not outdoor cats.  I also have a cardboard scratch thing that I got at Petsmart and clip their nails every month.  They do not claw the furniture in Pod or apartment.
It's close quarters but they seem to have a good time.

We've had them all our time together -a long time :)- and my family got our first bones back in the late fifties when I was a boy! So Siamese have always been part of my life. This guy is a talker, it is like he always has something to say, comment on or complain about. He's a ladies man, won' t spend more than 3 minutes on my lap, but sleeps the evening way on my wife or daughter!

There is a post in the general information area where I asked how to post pictures and got some good help. Check it out. The key is to compress the photos to a smaller size. I use the Windows photo program utility to do that.

I got 4 siamese , traditionnal with short hair : 1 seal point and 1 chocolate point (2 biological sisters), and 2 tortie point. All females ! Girls power lol

Here's our boy - he's an old man now - 12 1/2 years. His sister passed away this spring with jaw cancer, so he is on his own now. She was a typical "apple-head" with the round head, short hair, and slightly crossed blue eyes. Dusty has some traits of the Snowshoe and other long haired Siamese: he likes hard surfaces, sleeps with his head and paws over the edge of something. Except for the long fur he has the same markings as his sister did. The two were the same size - 8 lbs. Their mom was the long hair and dad was a short hair parent. The rest of the litter was short hair. We called him Dusty because as the runt of the litter he scooted around like a little dust ball.

We just got back from a three day weekend with our long haired Siamese. He was content to stay in the pod either on the bed or on the worktop next to the sink where he could look out the window in the 171 -he likes to sleep on hard surfaces. We found a little dog harness (he's a little guy - only 8 lbs) and a 12 foot small dog plastic coated wire lead at Walmart and staked him out every now and then. When he got tired of outside, he asked to be let back in. He didn't seem to mind our being gone in the middle of the day - he sleeps most of the day and becomes active when we get home, anyway. We have a couple of small plastic litter boxes for car use and that was fine by him. He woke us up early to get his treats like he does at home. We're doing separate vacations at the same time this year (usually we end up offsetting them because of work) and noone will be home to take care of the cat.  I've got a friend who is happy to stop by and feed the little guy, but I'm thinking of bringing him along camping with me and the dog.  The cat is good in the car, and he's content to be on a leash in the backyard at home.  He will be alone in the trailer during the day while the dog and I are off hiking.  Daytime temperatures in the trailer will be fine, 22-24C (we'll be under the trees in Algonquin).

Does anyone have any cat-camping advice?

Just took our 172 out this weekend for the first trip and with one cat (full time indoor)  - he's diabetic and needs shots 2x a day.  During the day propped up/open the bottom bunk with his tall scratching post and put litter box and his pet bed in there with a curtain screen.  He hung out there all day. At night put the litter box under the dining table so could collapse the bunk for sleep.  He was pretty stressed the first day and night, but did much better the 2nd night.  Will try for a longer trip and see how he does. We took them last year in a popup, other than them being cold, which should be better in tha pod, having to take care coming in and out, it went fine. Worst part was the litter box. It took up allot of room. Took us 6 months but finally found a small litter box for them. We clean their loo every morning and some times in the evening so a small will work better. Also we got them some sleeping mats, but I think they will do like last year and use our bed again. Only time they went under the covers. I am so glad you asked!  Yes, I have two housecats  Tah (Tahiti) and her brother Bim (Bimini)
 
I have the RP175 and the RDome.  how do you keep them in and safe?  They are not declawed, so I'm thinking they will make shreeds of the tenting material.  they have toys and scratching rugs. 
they are both older cats and I'm hoping they wil not do that, but...
 
How do they fare in the mod?  I'm going to take them for a trial run for a couple of days and nights to hopefully get them used to it.
 
any tips would be appreciated.Ouch

Not anymore.  When we lived in our motorhome traveling around for 6 years we had a cat with us.  We would put the cat carrier of a seat, with seat belt holding it, open the door and she would jump in.  Then she would sleep until we stopped  for lunch.  She liked the big front window to watch the campground!

Right now we only travel with the dog.  Since we have four cats, it would be difficult to take them all and as they are all older, I don't think they would enjoy it.   The next kitten that I get will be treated more like a dog as it is growing up and taken places so that it will be used to travel and then I hope to be able to take it camping.  That will make it easier for us to leave home and not worry about having to get someone over to take care of things at home. 

My boss has 4 kids and a husband that she camps with in an outback (no slideout) and they take their diabetic cat with them.   He seems to like camping and certainly likes it more than he likes boarding.  They use a harness to walk him.
