I came back to post an update and found the most recent suggestion about changing the battery--which is what I had just done. After a few fits and starts I ended up opening the device and found the battery to be leaky.  Got a new one (also no small thing because there no real shopping here; it was a 9 volt and I had to go the 3 places).

All's well that ends well though. Thanks to you both for helping me think through it.

You might try putting a new battery in the meter first.

Thank you. I put off checking the volt meter because my car battery is so hard to get to. That was my first guess before you mentioned it.  I have seen 14.6 - 14.7 when plugged in with a 2 amp trickle charger.  Try your car battery and see if you also get a high read.  If so, purchase another voltmeter, they are pretty cheap.

Hi folks,

I went to check my battery charge with my volt meter this morning and got a reading of 15.4. 

I am not plugged in (so they aren't actually charging) and they read 12.5 yesterday.

I have two 12v set up in series. They've been fine so I know they are connected correctly. Water level is good. 

I disconnected them from each other and tested them separately 15.4

Could the problem be my voltmeter? Any other thoughts?

I appreciate the help.
