If you get a short that is where the high current will come from. Solar modules don't create high currents when the get shorted, so they won't blow the fuse. If you short the battery though you will melt the insulation off and potentially have an electrical fire, so the fuse needs to be at that end.]]>

If not you should get one for your travelling toolbox. What you plan to do should have the correct polarity but it's always good to verify with a meter before connecting. You should also place an inline fuse in the leg between the battery pos terminal and the connector, as close to the battery as possible. The fuse should be sized to protect the wire:<br /><br />15 amp for 14 gauge<br />20 amp for 12 gauge<br />30 amp for 10 gauge.]]>
