That 5000 lb tow rating vs. the 3500 lbs with the Hybrid is very important. You will find that when loaded up with gear, supplies, dogs, grandkids etc that 3500 lbs just isn’t enough to tow your trailer safely and reliably, and you’re quite likely going to be over legal weight as well.

You won’t get much if any fuel economy benefit with the Hybrid while towing either, just too much load on the drivetrain for the Hybrid system to cycle on and off and work efficiently. So with its smaller gas tank you will be fueling up often and worrying about running low. The Highlander is an excellent vehicle but I’d strongly suggest you consider trading your Hybrid out for a standard V6 version. Be sure to get one with the factory tow package so you have the 5000 lb rating.

Instead of spending my winter planning my garden, I am reading up on owning a camper. I have a 2017 hybrid Highlander that I'm hoping to use as my tow vehicle. I've ordered an EWD with sway control and am studying the options on waste water disposal. Any advice is welcome. I have enjoyed reading many of the posts here, other members are so kind to post their modifications and helpful suggestions. I am retired, raising teenaged niece and nephew, so wanted the bunks for their stuff. I plan on putting them each outside in their own pup tents unless the weather is bad. My husband sometimes goes with us; we have been staying in state park cabins when we get to the woods; but sometimes he stays home with the dogs. One hound is 105 in dog years, the other is a fearful aggressive girl. I have 10 grandkids, and hope to get various members of that crowd out on the road with me from time to time. I enjoy knitting and art, music and being outdoors.
