We use a white lithium spray lubricant on the ball before we attach the pod.  I wipe it off when we unhook so that it will not accumulate trash or dirt.  It keeps both the ball and receiver clean and helps reduce friction and noise.  I have seen lots of trailer balls with scars and escratches that came from embedded grit without lube. A lot of people cover their trailer balls with tennis balls when not in use.

Grease/lube is a must. I don't know any manufacturer that says " we recommend no grease or lubrication on 2 moving steel parts".
