I'd recommend a sonic gauge, such as:

Okay. I understand what is happening. I have one of those gauges and it also malfunctioned. It let gas through, but as soon as an appliance started using gas, it could not keep the flow up and the flame dropped. I could see the needle going down. I took a pipe cleaner (they are still around, but mostly for crafts now) and poked it through the hole in the end that has the acorn nut. There must have been something in there since It started working properly after I did that. I would not guarantee that the same procedure would work for you, but it would be worth a shot if you wanted to try to save that gauge. The better bet would probably be to replace it though. Or, just use the hot water method to check the level in your tank. Could be.  Some of those gauges are just bad jokes.  But why do you say that?  A bad gauge shouldn't stop the flow of propane if there's any in the tank.  And there is a difference between a gauge and a regulator.  Have you tried any of the things anyone has already suggested?  Telling whether there is any propane in the tank is easy, in any number of ways.  That's the first thing to determine and the easiest fix.  Even if you're not sure whether it's empty you can take it and have it filled, or try another tank.  It's not a bad idea to have a spare.

Please let us know if and how you get this resolved.  Sometimes it's something weird, maybe even unheard of.  We call all learn from each other's experiences.

Dumb question, but are you getting gas to any of the other appliances?
