You left out Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyons up here in the Panhandle. Plus there is Lake Meredith (free!) and Buffalo Springs Lake. Lake MacKenzie, White River Lake, Lake Allan Henry are a few others. 

All of these are in scenic areas, and Caprock Canyons has a large Bison herd that roams the park.

Occasionally they will meander right thru your campsite. THAT will get your attention!

Texas does actually have scenery. Big Bend has some pretty impressive mountains and the Hill Country is nice too. There's also the Davis Mountains, which I'd like to visit sometime to check out the astronomical observatory there.

I dunno man....we camp about 500 feet from the Magic Circle: 75 acres of Federal Land set aside as clothing optional.

+1 Every part of North America has qualities worthy of a visit. There is always more to see and do, and interesting people to meet. And everyone has a different experience they want to get from camping. If we all wanted to go to the same places and experience the same things those places would be uninhabitable.

Just a comment - I spent 20 years at Fort Hood, I think that close to Tyler, greatest memories in my life, beautiful area of country and not near Dallas and Houston. I also served at Yuma, I roamed, primitive camped and hunted from Yuma to Quartzite, to Wickenburg to Gila Bend. That desert is amazing. One of the few places I could hang out in a Saguaro "forest", come across graves and turquoise mines. Not see another person for days. +1 to Bum on this issue. + 1 on the Sept/Oct time frame, best time of year for adult camping. Weather is great but kiddies are back in school. Only downside for solar weenies is the lower solar irradiance levels in the fall. Spring is better from that perspective. 

You can get the same effect though with dispersed National Forest or BLM camping any time of the year. Campgrounds? Campgrounds?  We don't need no stinkin' campgrounds.

I know this bucks the trend a bit, but I'd want a boondocking off-grid (no pun intended) situation during a work-week time frame, say Tuesday thru Friday...during the school year...example September or October... That way the campgrounds tend to be a lot less crowded. Temperatures would be milder so probably no A/C needed.

Of course, this rally might be only 2 r-pods in the middle of nowhere...but actually, I'm OK with that too!

BTW, the Quartzsite area has a lot to offer...lots of stuff to do during the winter season...but I was kidding about dragging a Texas Rally two states over.

But I will be there anyway!

Well unless you want to park out on the BLM land and go to shows, there's probably more to do closer to Tyler than to Quartzite.   Dallas metro is 1.5 hours. Quartzite is only half an hour from Blythe but then, you're in Blythe.Tongue 

I like the idea of a boondock pod rally, but how about doing it somewhere which is a nice quiet scenic destination in its own right?   Somewhere in the Rockies or the Appalachians? Or if you like the desert, Organ Pipe in the early spring? The desert around Quartzite isn't particularly attractive.

The event at Lake Texoma is in a state park and predominantly couples or singles attend. Granted, there's not much in the way of attractions nearby (other than the lake), but I enjoy just hanging out amongst the trees, even if they're bare at that time of year.

If you don't like the current offerings, start your own. The first R-Pod rally in Texas that I'm aware of was in Tyler, organized the first year by one person and we took it over the second year. We now organize both Texas R-Pod rallies. If anyone wants to take one of them off our hands, I'd definitely be open to that. This is the fourth year for this event. It takes place at Jellystone at Whispering Pines just east of Lindale, TX. This year, the event coincides with the Masters Challenge (Dog) Agility Cup in nearby Tyler. If you're a cat person, the Tiger Creek Animal Santuary has several large cats that they care for.
