PodPatrol Help : The one I had something like 10...

    Author: mountain mist
Subject: 1288
Posted: 13 Jul 2010 at 9:18am

The one I had something like 10 years ago was given to my son. It was rusted and gummed up, but I brought it home since he was not going to clean it or use it and it is like new now. I had bought a little cast iron cleaner (looks like a flint to sharpen knives, but softer since it does wear down) that was next to the checkout counter at our local Lodge cast iron store. Had never used one , or had to since I keep all my cast iron correctly. BUT the thing worked , I really recommend it for rusted pieces you might find in a flea market and want to restore. With the pie iron I just did as recommended to get neglected cast iron back into shape, this time wrapping the wooden handle ends in double heavy duty foil and loveinly soothing shortening in all the crannies. Had soft hands also!
I think cast iron is a legecy to a lot of things American. I have a piece my Dad bought Mom before I was born and it was Used even then. It was one of the big 3 legged (#12) pots with the lid you pile coals on. Now that was in the depression, so the one pot was precious. However, true collecters groan when l them that Dad ground off the legs and smoothed them down for on/in the stove cooking. When I see those places that have been left of the peg legs it involkes pictures of loving hardship for people. Anyway, it is sooo heavy that I now have to 2 hand it to lift it. Figuring my age and when the great depression was it also is well past 75 yrs old. And looks great. I should look so good Other pieces I have are more like 30+ yrs. old and one piece I bought this year to carry in the Pod, a little 2 qt. dutch oven, cutest thing.

I know it will really need to be re-seasoned after the work on it. I don't keep oven cleaner on hand, so have not even started and have not been home. Alas, still have not had my first test drive, but I do not plan to rush the husband and put more stress on him.

It is, however, getting "dolled" up inside, a time for everything.

Going next week when the humidity comes down to flush the system out.
