They are made of one of two materials: magnesium or aluminum. Magnesium is more effective but disintegrates more quickly as a result. Don't replace it prematurely.  It can look like holy crap and still be doing its job as well as when it was new.

Even can be found in my local Tru Value Hardware store. Very common, standardized part.
