Thanks to both Mr. Smith (furpod) and the illustrious David for keeping this run smoothly.  To be funny I would like to throw a snowball at each of you, just to share the wealth, as we received 12" last evening.  They even had to cancel the Cherry Ball drop and all related festivities in Traverse City last night, just too dangerous to be out in it.  So instead, my DW and I took a romantic walk on our 20 acres around midnight in the midst of a blizzard of snow, pretty cool.

One of the things that I have always liked about furpod is his "knack" to be (most of the time) simple, direct, to the point and....RIGHT!   

The concept of "free exchange of information".....well....all of these web sites are owned by somebody who pay/paid the expenses of creating and continuing to maintaining them. While it may not cost us (personally) to use them, we are subject to any "use conditions" that they wish to impose. "Free"...we are as free as the owners allow us to be.

On this forum, we are fortunate to have an owner who very generously covers these costs for us. Not only that, the "use conditions" are pretty darned unrestrictive, IMHO. This is something I think we can all be thankful for. Situations like this are becoming more uncommon.


PS - furpod… Good news...I have it on "good authority" that our salaries are being doubled this year!

Bad news....2 X 0 still equals zero.

I hope you enjoy your increased compensation as much as I!

I'm going to go (not too far) out on a limb and predict that we will see an increasing amount of this sort of thing (again, generally speaking). There are "calls" for some degree of accountability regarding social media activity.

Though unrelated and as an example, locally, we had an explosion at a high school and there were those who quickly posted stuff to the social medias that was not at all correct. This sort of thing causes panic, distress.....problems. Who should be accountable for this? (the incident was not evil but instead, a natural gas leak).

I'm sorry it happened to you, as I am certain your intentions were 100% good. I think you have the right attitude. It is their sandbox and if you want to play there, you play by their rules. I don't envy the moderators of the larger media sites.

I do not believe I have ever heard or seen this happen here. I personally talk about other groups, forums, and pages from time to time. If you feel like you have been moderated in some manner for mentioning other resources, please let an admin know.

We just don't do that here. In fact, it was censorship and post deletes (on another forum) that sparked the creation of this forum. All of the admins take this very seriously.

That said, and generally speaking, the web and social media platforms are changing and coming under increasing scrutiny. For example, think of reports in the news of foreign entities using social media platforms to attempt to influence our political elections. (just one of the reasons we don't talk politics here)

What darned few "rules" that we DO have are not there to restrict us. To the contrary, they are there to help keep us free. Something to think about.

Wow, it never occurred to me that some internet boards/forums have rules against referring to other boards/forums.  And what the heck is "mining" in internetspeak? But, I don't do twitter, facebook, etc. so what I know about internet etiquette could be written on the head of a pin, along with the dancing angels of Thomas Aquinas.  

This is the only discussion forum I participate in, apart from my many posts in the comment sections of the Washington Post, where I engage in all kind of political, religious, philosophical, etc rants about the current state of affairs in the world.  I am glad we have reasonable rules here with moderation that respects all participants.  We are fortunate, indeed.

Sorry, I didn't mean we couldn't do that here.  I meant we apparently can't do it everywhere.  You're right, I don't recall any complaints about mentioning other fora here.  I don't recall them coming up very often, but they have.

I'm not sure what kind of blinders people wear that they don't already know that there are other forums out there.  I don't do Facebook, but maybe some of those folks don't realize the internet extends beyond Facebook?
