You might consider finding slides to fit the R-dome rail, and make an awning out of a tarp that attaches to the rail, with a couple of posts at the outer corners.
 
I've seen a youtube video of a guy who did that. Our ouR-pod is a new 189 with the 11mm rail. We have the dome but we will also be building a simple awning for shade that will go up quick and easy.

I intend to use a couple of screw type dog tie-outs for corner anchors.

I found the slides for about 2.50$ ea at a sail shop. Look under "slides"
I'll use one of the silver "Heavy duty" tarps from Harbor Freight. Poles I have not yet tackled.

I have a 178 with a keder rail. It's not very easy to add a Thule awning because the wall lacks the support structure to carry the weight of the awning. The Pods with awnings have that reinforced wall structure. I purchased a new 178 R-pod.  We would like to modify it to enable a rail awning to be installed. Forrest River explained the 178 has the rail system for the R-dome and it is not possible to install a Thule awning without modification and referred us to the Forum for ideas.  

I would be very appreciative if anyone has some ideas on how to approach this modification. I am very handy but new to the R-pod world.
