I think I'll go ahead with my plans for a little further south east: Cartagena. Then I only have to worry about dengue and chickungunya. Besides, I have to bring my wife home after her surgery. Thankfully, all went exceptionally well and she'll be good to travel by the end of the month.

Whitney; Palisades glacier for one, has all but disappeared. As the fires burn up existing forests, insufficient precipitation ensures that what eventually will come back will be vegetation much more like the far south end of California, with explosive manzanita brush and such. Camping in the west is significantly changing.

Only AK and TX are bigger. My parents are north of Sacto.. But thankfully, away from the fires. To put it in perspective,, the 20 million people in Los Angeles are over 600 miles away from the Carr fire.. and it's like 100 miles farther to the Oregon border. And more then 100 miles to the Mexico border going the other way..
