KOAs are privately owned campgrounds that join the organization.  KOA runs a tight ship and if the campground doesn't keep up to their standards they get dropped.  So usually there will be no surprises when you go to a KOA.  We like them but they are very kid friendly and have lots of activities/play areas for them.  For this reason we actually try to avoid them since we only want a quiet place (no pool or activities) to stay for a few days while we go off sightseeing.

We stay at them quite often, they usually have a pool and hot tub. We have camped a few times in Virginia loved it! We stayed several years in a row at the Maddox Family campground on Chincoteague Island ( now a KOA), the KOA in Fredericksburg and the KOA in Harrisonburg/Shenandoah Valley. We're thinking of somewhere local for our maiden voyage.
