beefing up frame : If you only plan on a total load...

    Author: StephenH
Subject: 10873
Posted: 03 Nov 2017 at 9:14pm

If you only plan on a total load of much less than 150 lbs, then it can be done. I did so before. The spare went on a BAL spare tire carrier. You can see pictures in our mods (see link in signature). The reason it needs to be much less than 150 lbs is that the weight on a carrier sits farther out than the spare or bicycles do. That means that the force exerted is much more. You also need to count the weight of the rack as part of that load.

The other consideration is balance. You need to make sure you don't put so much weight on the back that your tongue weight drops below the recommended 10-15% of the total trailer weight.

Since ours was repaired and since we now have a pickup truck, I am no longer using the rack. It went to our daughter who needed it more than we did. We also are no longer using the BAL spare tire carrier. I will need to find a new home for it. The space where it was mounted now has the sewage hose holder and ladder holder instead so there is no room for it.
I would also be very aware of the weight I was going to put on it along with where does the spare go.

beefing up frame : well.. since you are asking about...

It voids the warranty, if you have one. And of course, every pound you add takes away from any cargo capacity.. I wouldn't attempt to add a hitch for a couple reasons. If I was to beef it up, I would come straight back off the rails, and build a tray.

BTW, there is no such model as a 170, it does help if we know which model you actually have. :)
