Normally this would be indicative of a shorted battery, somehow a negative plate has made contact with a positive plate. There could be other causes but, start with removing the old battery, have it tested, it will be bad. Get another battery and run a controlled experiment, that will give you chance to monitor charging system and loads. You need a meter and some basic knowledge. The charging system when working right is controlled, so I think that will not be the issue, but without testing, who knows. Hello all, I'm the proud owner of a 2014 177 that my wife and I use for exploring the great pacific NW. Recently we were camping at Cape Disappointment in Washington when the R Pod battery started smoking and smoldering. Actually, we had unhooked the trailer from my truck in order to go fishing for a few hours. When we returned a neighbor camper notified us that while we were gone the campground started to have a strong sulfer odor so he looked around and found the battery smoking. He turned off the campsite electric panel and the battery eventually stopped smoking.
