Neat video Bob! Thanks for sharing. I love the stability of the DJI. West coast of Florida is a pretty place. Good speckled trout fishing around there? Black Drum? Grouper? Sorry, I was reminiscing. Spent a lot of time a bit further south - Sanibel/Captiva - to get away from the crowds on the east coast.

That really does make sense in Yellowstone. I think the last time someone tried to rescue their drone from a hot spring all they found were empty flip flops. Dead Darwin award!

We just left Yellowstone National Park.  There were lots of obvious signs that said any use of drones, rc aircraft or other "unpiloted" flying machines was illegal.

Let's try this. Earlier spring with a $20 keychain camera velcroed to the bottom of my $50.00 drone. Video quality kinda sucks and it's not gimbaled or stabilized, but it still is great fun!!

Leo, Yep! That's me!! BTW, my drone recovery tool can be used to shoot a line w/bait about 200 yards from dock or shoreline! Will let you know how that goes!

Bob, that's really cool. Is it your first drone? Prolly a lot easier to fly than my little toy? Have you tried walking the dog with it? (sorry, couldn't help that). Actually, I really would like to get one (DJI) and probably will when I get one of those amazon itches.

Ya know TT, I think the biggest burden on National Park Rangers would be rescuing the people trying to rescue their drones!

I'm curious if there are any DJI pilots here. I've been learning with a Syma x5c. It's probably a good beginner drone because you have to fly it, rather than just tell it where to go and come back. Took me quite a while to get it to go where I wanted it to, and come back. After seven months I still have it and it still flies which I am pretty proud of! I upgraded the camera cuz it's fun.

There is a Drone School very close by which I might consider if I was going to invest in expensive aircraft or wanted to go pro. Otherwise, there is plenty of acreage around where I am able to have fun and not bother anyone except family and friends to help me get it out of trees.

Any privilege can be abused, and probably will be, but thinking of National Parks, which are arguably the most desirable places to take pictures from drones, I don't think people not flying drones should have to see or listen to or dodge other peoples' drones.  For the most part, I don't want your drone in my photos either.  I think more than all that though, park resources are often scarce. I don't want rangers diverted form other chores to police people with drones -- which I think would be a necessary outcome of drones in (National) Parks.

Like any other technology, if your motives are right and you take the time to learn your craft, drones are an interesting way to extend ones senses and experience.  The better (more expensive) drones will actually have their firmware updated periodically with no-fly zone info and FAA sanctioned altitude limits.  (These can be overridden, but that goes back to your purity of motivation.)

Specifically, from a camping standpoint, I do not intend to bring my drone along.  Nor do I blast music, and my dogs are pretty well behaved.  It's a courtesy thing...

I was given an inexpensive drone for Christmas. It really is great fun, especially with the camera. It has been a bit of a learning curve as the one I have does not have gps or "home" button. It has been known to fly off in unintended directions. I could easily see how annoying it might be in a crowded campground - especially with my frequent crash landings.

If you do fly in a wooded area like I generally do, I would strongly suggest you build a Drone Recovery Unit. I have used this often, as high as 50 feet or so! Instructions: Load line arrow into unit. Release reel bale. Take careful aim above drone with proper trajectory to arc over branch/tree and back to earth. Fire! When arrow reaches earth, attach 100 feet of heavier cord to fishing line and reel in. With two members of your Drone Recovery Team on either end of cord, shake tree and/or branch until drone falls to earth.

On a more serious note, I probably wouldn't complain a lot if they set aside defined areas for them. They do look like they would be fun to fool around with. I think if used responsibly they are ok. However, I live close to 2 airports and have somebody that lives nearby that flies one at night without the navigation lights on. There has been instances in TN of folks feeling their privacy was invaded and shooting them with shotguns. The law seems to be supporting this. Here in the Hoosier State, the law makers have been busy and recently enacted legislation that forbids the use of drones in park properties. I can kind of see both sides of the issue but generally would rather not deal with drones.
