I just received my Honda 2000i. Set it up , plugged in my 179, everything ran, even the air conditioner. I only ran the air conditioner for a short time. Time will tell if I choose the right one...

I was just looking at the cap on my Firman.  It doesn't look like a big job to get another cap from Firman (if they'll sell you one) and seal it air-tight by removing the inner piece that lets it draw air and seal the holes (Epoxy is gasoline resistant), then drill a center hole and install a nozzle that you can fit a hose to (that's not rocket science either).  If there's nothing else to it, then you need a gas can with a vent.  OK, old gas cans had the screw-off vent on the backside but modern ones don't have one, so again, you'll have to figure out how to make a fitting with a cap and seal it to the gas can.  If I haven't missed anything, that's all that $146 unit has going for it.  Well, it's a project to think about, but I won't know how badly I think I need it until the weather cools off and we start using our camper.  We are doing a camping-lifestyle change.  We have been "travelers."  Class B Mercedes motorhome.  See a lot but don't spend much time camping in one spot.  Walmart international campgrounds have been our preference because we just need a place to sleep and hit the road in the morning.  Now with a Pod, those days are over.  Travel trailers are better suited for people that stay in one place a few days and not as suited to the "drive-all-day" traveler where the motorhome shines because you can use the inside of the camper all day (It's always cool in the camper...wife can go to the bathroom, get me a sandwich or a drink, etc...while going down the road, something you can't do with a travel trailer unless you stop some place and go into the trailer, which is HOT.) . So we are going to see how much we like "place-camping" this fall.  There may be a real nice 2018 RP-176 for sale this fall! LOL

Thanks for finding that.  Two problems... they cost 1/4 as much as the whole generator and I seriously doubt they fit a Firman Gen (they seem to be mostly Honda, although they list a few Odd makes).  There's the problem.  It seems like every Gen has a different size of fill cap.  Even if I could find the correct gas cap, I'd really have to want it badly to pay over $140 for that system.  I wonder if a guy could make his own?  It doesn't seem to be anything more than another tank and a hose to a gas cap designed to take a hose?  It uses "vacuum draw technology" but is that anything more than your gen cap being sealed (so it doesn't draw air around it but has to draw through the siphon hose in the middle) and the second tank has the vent so it has to draw through that one?

I have seen extended run tanks that use a larger gas tank with a special cap that draws from the larger tank as the generator is running. I have not had need of one so far, but I would look into whether there is one for the Firman. It looks like an excellent buy. I may look into it when it comes time to replace my Generac iX2000. In my case, the drawback would be the weight. I can lift the Generac but the Firman would be too much. I would need a ramp to load in into the truck bed.


Yes, it does weigh more than the 2000 watt Gens.  I have never heard of those special caps you spoke of.  I'll have to do some research and see if I can find something.  Right now at 50% power, I'm only getting about 5 hours out of it.  If I need to run it all night when it's too hot out to sleep, I'll need another 3 hours.

I can tell you the last camping trip we went on I took some readings of my geny. My geny at 25' behind the pod, ambient noise 38 dBs, 1/4 load 48 dBs, full load 50 dBs. From the front 25' ambient noise 38dNs 1/4 load 46dBs, full load 50 dBs, At 50' distance ambient noise 38 dBs 1/4 load 40 dBs, full load 42 dBs. Actually it's no worse than any others I've had.  At about 20 feet I measured it at 64 db but like all measurements it depends on a lot of other things like the ambient noise around you (cars driving down the road near my house), the foliage around you or running it near an open garage door.  It's rated at 58 db.

Answered my own question, 95 lbs. It reviews well and is impressive. My issue is size and weight. It's 2' long and 18" high and wide. I like the 30A RV plug. Just got my new Firman 3000/3500 watt Gen delivered and have it running at 50% power for the next 5 hours for the recommended break-in. This appears to be a premium Gen for $759 delivered. It's pull start/electric start/remote start. I put in the oil, filled with gas, hit the remote and it started right up. Features:
USB plug for charging phones
eco mode
two 20 amp 120v receptacles
one 30 amp RV plug
Battery charger with cables
Parallel operation with a second Firman with optional cables
hour meter/voltage meter/HZ meter
1.8 gallon tank
9 hour run time at 25% power

The only drawback I can see to this one is the tank is too small.

I have had no problem deleting spam posts in the past.  At worst this one is a "maybe".  If every post links to that site then I would reconsider.

Understand that this forum was started due to censorship on another pod site, so we have been very careful about what gets deleted.


I don't need to harp on this too much.  But, a quick search reveals that every single post by davevans is in reference to generators and him "finding" the website.  A link to said website included in the body of every post, and the link is also in his signature.  Bugs me when folks try to market like that dishonestly.

I just ordered a "Firman" brand from Electric Generators Direct.  I've read all the posts about guys having trouble getting the 13.5 kw A/C running with the Honda and the Yamaha, especially re-starting it (quick run cycles) in hot weather and having to put a "hard-start" kit on the A/C to get them to work. I ordered the W03083 Whisper with remote control so I can stop/start it from inside the Pod.  It's a 3000 watt (3500 watt surge) gen with a 9 hour run time.  It's going to be a lot better than my old Honda 2000 that was always hard to start.  And it cost $759 with free shipping.  Yep, you can buy cheaper Gens, but not with electric and remote start.  Firman just started selling under their own name this spring.  They produce all the Gens for the "other guys" like Coleman, etc.

I do disagree with the point about the clean inverter-generator power being better for electronics.  Their power supplies actually filter out very dirty power w/o an issue.

Hey Ken! I know I am a little late to the conversation but hopefully this helps someone out there.

As far as purchasing a generator is concerned, there are two main factors to consider. The first is how much power you will require and the second is noise emissions.

POWER: If you are tenting and do not require your generator to power a 13,500 BTU AC unit then something around the 2000W range should power most of your appliances without worry (coffee makers, hair dryers, CD players, laptop/phone charging etc). If you do require something that can power an AC unit on an RV you should be looking in the 3000W and above range for a 13,500 BTU unit.

NOISE: No one wants their campsite to sound like a construction zone. If you are looking for quiet portable power you are in the market for an INVERTER generator (as opposed to a conventional generator). Inverters also produce a "cleaner" power source that is suitable for sensitive electronics such as laptops and smartphones. The inverting process produces a smoother sine wave that will not damage the microprocessors within these electronics.

Many people swear by Honda's and Yamaha's and they are the industry leaders when it comes to inverter generators BUT there are many alternative companies (ie Champion, WEN, Westinghouse) putting forth very competitive products at a lesser price that merit consideration when shopping around for a generator.

I have the Yamaha version of the Honda 2000 and couldn't be happier. It has a fuel gauge and the Honda does not and it also has a quiet energy savor mode. Starts every time first pull regardless if its winter or summer.

Bought it on sale at Cabelas. Normal price is $2000.00 and we got $200.00 off on sale plus 5% veteran discount.

I have owned Yamaha motorcycles and found these were 200,000 mile or more machines with nearly no parts failures. Yes, without turning any breakers off too. The only thing it struggles with is if your run the AC, turn it off, and turn it right back on again. If the gen is set to eco mode it will throw the overload. If the gen is not on eco mode it will still fire up the AC.

If you wait 4-5 mins after turning the AC off before turning it back on again in eco mode the gen will fire it up. The condenser in the AC unit has some affect on this I believe. So when you wait a few mins everything runs just fine. Even with the gen in eco mode.

The only knock I might have on the gen is that it's hard to see the display in bright sunlight. It has an led display that shows remaining fuel and runtime. I still love the dg3000 inverter I bought from Scooter wholesale for $479, (all in ,no tax no shipping fee). Runs the A/C except when it's 97 degrees at 9000 ft up in the Sierras. It's real quiet on econ mode when charging the batteries. Iv'e put 20 hours on it in the last year and it starts first or second time every time.
It's cheap and gets the job done

No it's not a Honda but weighs almost exactly the same as one or a Generac. Is as quiet, consumes about the same amount of gas as one and has 25% more power and costs half the price.

Just about everyone that buys a small or smaller model gen wishes it was a little bit bigger. Or has to turn things off to do this or that. Well this one is a lot less expensive. No need to turn off the converter to run the micro or A/C with this unit. It will do both all while being portable.
