I live in a city and have a drain clean out in my front yard.when I need to dump my tanks at home I use that gos in to city sewers. Now that you are working again, I suggest that next time you dump you fill the black tank about half way with clean water.  Maybe go ahead and add one of those enzyme packs, which you ought to do every time you first use the black tank after a flush.  Then drive a hundred or so miles, or all the way home with that fresh water sloshing around in the tank.  That should help dissolve any remaining caked on crud in the tank.  Find a place to dump while things are still suspended in the slurry.

Sorry for the late response - the forum wouldn't let me post. Said I had posted too much and was a spammer. 

Dippered all the water in the toilet out into a tub. 

Put the the sewer hose back on - as we don't have a kiddy pool at the ready. 

Then hooked up the: RV Flexible Swivel Stick - Holding Tank Rinser with Shut-off Valve - Flexible 55 1/2 reach for offset basement holding tanks - rotary cleaning action. 

For whatever reason - this thing really worked. Within a couple minutes I could hear liquid moving through the sewer hose and then saw it start to wiggle as more moved through it. 

Success! 

Nick says everyone needs to have one of these things - it really worked well. 

Thank you all for your encouragement and ideas. It helps a lot to not feel all alone in the struggle!

There is a solution called "RV digester" that RV techs use. It's enzymatic and breaks up solid waste clogs. The drawback is that it needs to set overnight or longer. Good, I use my wand all the time, once I have returned home. I got a large tote which I put holes in the catch waste and make clean up easier. Nick was inside with it and I was outside to run the water on command. Turned on the water and within a minute or two thought I was hearing liquid in the sewer hose. Then saw the sewer hose start to wiggle and we had confirmed movement. FINALLY!!!!!

Problem is fixed. Nick says the RV swivel thingy is a must have for every one. It is pretty cool in our book.

Thank you everyone for all the advice and encouragement. It helps immensely to not feel alone with it all!

My job was to be water master - on and off at command of DH inside. It didn't take very long after I turned the water on for me to start hearing what sounded like liquid moving through the sewer hose.

Actually thought I was hearing things - but was looking at it hard and saw it start to wiggle and the sound got louder. 

Within minutes, the problem was resolved. And Nick says to tell everyone thank you and that the RV swivel doohickey is a "must have" for everyone. (Swivel doohickey my words - must have for everyone his words) 

Thank you so very very very much for all the suggestions and encouragement - it helps immensely to just not feel all alone when issues arise!

Perhaps you could get a gallon of that colonoscopy prep stuff!! I know for a fact it works for my holding tank (personal, not rv).

Try running the snake from the drain outlet end. It is understandable that it would have little effect when going down the toilet.

The blockage is most likely at the low point - from the valve back towards the toilet. I think we're at the point that one starts to build an altar to said camping gods in appeasement. Might even throw in a dance or two around it...If the North Dakota Wind doesn't blow us away first...

(I just got a nasty bump on my head curtesy of the truck door and a particularly strong gust of wind)

We have purchased and used a 15 ft hose, a drain snake for the toilet from the top, a really long thing for the dryer vent that bent backwards and wouldn't go forwards. Now trying a new thing called an RV Flexible Swivel Stick.

Will report back soon...

If I had to deal with it, I would approach it as jimandclare suggest. A small 15' (I think) drain snake can be purchased at Walmart for about $15. (I bought a new one a while back to clean my clothes dryer vent.)

Plenty of YouTube videos on methods to clear blocked black tanks and what could cause the problem. One rv repair person connected the drain hose to the tank and a dump station. The hose had a small hole in it which allowed him to run a snake or stick into the tank and break up the blockage. There are some sites which claim that the blue tank chemicals cause a buildup of a hard calcium type deposit to grow in the tanks and cause blockages. No "schematic". It is an oblong tank, with a small bit of drop towards the center. vent out the top, and "inlet". PVC pipe elbow out the bottom front, 90 degrees to the dump tube/valve/outlet. Sticking a hose or snake up from the bottom is the only real/workable answer.

Furpod - #1 - Yes. DH is saying that he checked the valve and it is opening. He says there's the outside valve, you look inside the drain, you pull the handle and he can see the valve opening. He took the hose off just to look - "risking sludge coming at me". 

#2 - DH says it didn't drain. "It's full because it's all the way up inside the toilet". 

When we flush, the water fills up the toilet bowl but won't go down. The bowl will just get filled. We don't really go by the tank sensor. 

Tars Tarkas - We are and have been at full hookup campgrounds. Since we're just waking up from all the "fun" of last night. If nothing has changed, we'll probably have to go with your suggestion next. 

DH is asking if anyone has a schematic of the system so he has an idea of what it looks or is shaped?

Assuming the gate valve is open (it's hard to believe nothing would come out if it is), you can stick a running hose up into the valve.  After that, be sure to use plenty of water when you flush so as to keep things soupy in the tank.

Draining the tank maybe once a week during use is probably a good idea too.

My guess would be the valve has failed..
1st, are you sure you are opening the black tank valve?
2nd, are you sure it didn't drain? tank sensors suck.
If those are neither the problem.. next best guess is that the gate valve has broken, or the handle has come off internally. It threads in to the gate itself.

I can only offer moral support - I had the black tank drain torn off by a roadway 'alligator' and the experience of the repair was memorable. Your's is extremely memorable.
