Think twice when locking valuables in your outside storage compartments. It seems that many RV manufacturers all use the same key, CH751, on their locks and have for many years. We discovered this when we were shopping for a Jayco and the salesman left a set of keys out for us to check out a unit. He mentioned the "751" key. Seems that Jayco  uses it on all of them. Imagine my surprise when I turned over my R-pod keys to the new owner and saw that it  too had a 751 key.  I know that 99.44% of my fellow campers are decent folk, but what's the point in having a lock that anyone can open?

Befuddled.

I changed the locks. There is a company in California that was pretty good. On their website they have a template. You print it out. Take your current cam lock remove it and place the cam lock size over the template to measure size locking arm length and off set of the inside cam. Sounds complicated. I had no idea what I was doing and replaced both storage units and out side shower locks all with a new unique key. Google CH751 rv key replacement I think it was called industrial lock and hardware.

I REALLY appreciate these posts. I'll be changing my locks. By the way don't leave valuables in your tow vehicle unlocked either!

I changed all of the storage compartment locks to match the door key.  One less key to worry about.  Easy mod to make.  Note that the company does not offer a replacement lock for the outside shower because it is so small/short.  The link to RV Locks and More is below:

The deadbolt lock on the door is the only secure lock. If that is not locked, the factory, dealers, and who knows who else, have master keys that will work the door lock. When I have left our trailer at the dealer for service, I was told not to bother leaving keys, but to not lock the deadbolt. Likewise when I just sent it off to the factory for repairs.

If you want security, a camping trailer is not the place to get it. I am not going to obsess about it. I am not changing locks, but did make battery lock-down brackets which I can padlock. Other than that, I don't leave very valuable items in the R-Pod if we are not there. I don't want to let worry about possible theft ruin my camping experience. I also use a lock on the hitch socket.

That being said, I have never had anyone poking into either the tent when we were doing tent camping or the R-Pod since we bought it. There seems to be a certain level of trust in campers that we don't mess with other people's things.

Thought it was common knowledge.. many swap the outside door locks for combo locks etc. We liked the combo locks, because NO key to worry about.. LOL.. as far as security for valuables.. no door, including the dead bolted main door, takes more than 2 seconds to get into with a large screwdriver. So...

+2 to SH and Leo, not you're secured stuff you need to worry about, it's the sitting out stuff. Plus there's not a lot of MS 13 campers. Gangland hasn't made it to campgrounds, lately.

If you stress about thieves when your camping, you are camping in the wrong area or for the wrong reasons. I have left hunting camps full of valuables while taking an animal for a day, never worried about it. Maybe just make your camp look like you kill things and no one will mess with it?

Nothing that I had in the Pod camper storage was really worth stealing. Chair, EZ up, hoses. I have a small Weber Q120 that I left on it's stand, and my chair left near the camper for the weekend, and never had problems.

Think about it. If someone stole your stuff and you noticed, you would report it to the local police and the campground, then there would be police asking all the other campers if they saw anyone near your area. It would make it very difficult for another camper staying at the campground to get away clean with that kind of theft.

I have had my car broken into, and some valuable items stolen from me at a job I used to have. Both experiences left me angry and upset. In my mind, none of my stuff was worth stealing since it only had value to me, but it had some monetary value for the pot-heads that needed cash they could get at a pawn shop for the car stereo and the voltmeter that were stolen.

I learned to let it go, it's just stuff. I can afford to replace a few hundred dollars of camping crap. I don't take the family jewels with me when camping (well actually, I do carry those with me, but no one want them).

The problem with that is, thieves strike when you least expect it. I won't give them an opportunity. Or be naive enough to think they won't hit me. If it looks like you kill things, maybe they'll think, this guy's got a gun..let's look for it. I remember a scene in Full Metal Jacket...when that private left his foot locker open...the DI said "If it wasn't for people like you, their wouldn't be any thieves around, would there?"

Another thing we always do at hunting camp is put 1 to 3 trail cameras out. Usually do one way up in tree looking down, one pointing at car level and one pointing at camp. In the years we've been doing this never once had to go through the pictures.

I have 3 solar powered security lights on the POD, motion activated. Inexpensive, you come near the camper at night a light comes on, I'm respectful of fellow campers. They don't light if you are 20' away. I also have my TN provided concealed carry decal applied, just a heads up. Where I live in rural TN we have a lot of meth issues, you have to be secure with your property and possessions, these folks are like the walking dead.

I put in a 4-digit combination lock with a circular key override. If someone wants to try 10,000 combinations, have at it.

I replaced all my 751 locks with cam barrels using the same key that opens the door.  Very convenient to only have to use one key.  I also put cable locks around spare tire (has prevented one theft) and propane tanks and added hitch locks.  More importantly, I mounted a security box inside my RP178 under the dinette, with bolts that go through the floor.  If we need to leave something truly valuable like a purse or a laptop, it goes in there.  The box I bought is available at:

https://www.tuffyproducts.com/p-256-laptop-computer-security-lockbox.aspx

I agree with other comments that stuff like lawn chairs aren't too expensive to replace, but:
-- there's a lot of inconvenience.  It took trips to three RV stores to replace the spare tire cover that got thrown away by the thieves that wanted to steal the spare tire.
-- I know I and my wife would feel a sense of violation if someone rifled through our stuff.  We will feel better if we at least did some minimum security improvements.

I still need to add the motion detector LED lights, if only so I don't trip at night returning from the bathhouse!LOL

Hey Leo B,

I have three on Pod so can select where I want motion activated light, they work well. They are solar powered and common on line. Had positive comments from friendlies about walking up to camper and being startled by light. I don't want anybody picking my stuff up and have had experience with folks walking thru my campsite.

Let me check, I have had them awhile, they are solar powered - no batteries and have an on/offswitch, so you don't have to have them on. I think I bought them off eBay. Set of 4. Single screw mount. I put two on the slider side, because the slider is a block and one on the door side up front, because I put my fishing stuff near the tongue.
