The brakes on my 2016 172 started sticking pretty badly last fall. I stored my pod for the winter but I'm headed down to pick it up this weekend and need to figure out what is going on with them. I tried adjusting them according to the directions with my brake controller but it didn't help. Thoughts?

I believe they have a star wheel adjust, accessible from rear of drum. Lift wheel off ground, it should rotate freely without sticking. If it is sticking - back off the adjust until it just rotates freely. Do same for other side. Is it both sides that are sticking?

No, it just seemed to be one side.

I guess I should have said the brakes were grabbing. When I braked I got a jerky response on the pod brakes.

That can happen if you have the boost on your brake controller set too high. You may need to check that and back it off a bit.

First thing I would do is adjust and road test. One side may be adjusted tighter, the proportional brake control doesn't know the difference. If it is still occurring, you need to physically inspect inside drum. The star wheel adjusts are not foolproof, basically a matter of feel. I have a brake tool the measures the inside diameter of the drum and outside diameter of shoes, then adjust, but drum has to be off. With star wheel you are looking for some resistance, as equal as possible on both sides as you adjust the shoes out.

I will have to add that I did have to adjust the brakes on our 179. The door side was really tight, much more so than the slide side. I have not checked them again, but it took a little time to re-seat the brake shoes after I did the adjusting.

Yeah, not a fan of the star wheels only. All about feel.

I backed the controller off a lot and the brakes were still grabbing. And when I said they were grabbing on one side I'm basing that on my imperfect memory from last fall. I'll know more when I pick it up this weekend. I was hoping there was an easy fix.

Fairly easy, the norm for things that roll and have brakes, good to learn for future. You don't want brakes adjusted to tight, wears, shoes and drums and increases heat.
