I would like to see some sort of exhaust fan or hood for the gas stove. We cooked some sausage and the smoke you get from the sausage kept setting the smoke detector off. I turned the shower exhaust fan on hi and it help a little. Anybody have any suggestions for a fix?

I have a little Weber gas grill outside that I use for those breakfast meats, well, almost all meats.  It keeps the greasy air out of the camper and saves the beep beep beep.  Sometimes I cook the sausage or bacon the night before, and just reheat it in the camper.

Not a perfect solution, just what I found works for me.

It was our first trip so we were trying out all the appliances. I have a 14" Webber also that I used for the first time. I am use to a big grill but it cooked our potatoes and meat just fine. Took a little longer but worked great. We will cook more outside than in.

I have it hooked to a 1 gal propane bottle.  The 1 gallon bottle is a backup to the main system also.  One note though on using the bigger bottles with the adapter hose.  Hook up the hose to both the grill and the tank.  Have the grill OFF and slowly open the bottle.  Let it sit for a couple minutes before turning on the grill and lighting it.  If you go to fast, the safety valve in the tank shuts off the gas flow.

In our 179, the stove is right next to the door, so I found just leaving the outer door open vented the smoke pretty well. We still usually end up taking down the smoke detector and throwing it on the bed until we're through.

I have gone to cooking bacon etc at home and freezing it, then taking it along to warm up.

We also put the detector up with velcro, so we can remove it.  I keep thinking I'm going to rig a 5 minute timer to the detector that will allow me to disable it.

Had the door open. Stove on the left when you walk in. Not sure how the detector is mounted. Came installed. There was a breeze so it might have blown it back into the camper. It is when it is really raining. I have a few MRE's but not many. I know we can nuke our food or stick it in the oven and that is okay. I think I will buy a small fan and place it just past the stove to the door side and suck any off odors and smoke out the door. There is an outlet right below.

Above our house stove we have a hood that does not exhaust to the outside. Uses a charcoal filter. Does a great job. Might look into installing a small hood similar to it.

I usually crack the kitchen slide window to help draw cooking steam, and other airy effects out the bathroom fan. Make sure all other windows are closed to help maximize it worth. God luck

I've heard that putting a shower cap over the smoke detector works.  I haven't tried it.  You probably need to remember to uncover the smoke detector after cooking though.

We have a small George Foreman grill that's easy to take outside for the smokey stuff.

If the weather is too bad, we have a shower cap that we cover the smoke alarm with.  That takes care of the alarm noise but not the lingering aroma.  For those times, we have talked about moving the GF grill into the john - but haven't yet.

And sometimes in bad weather, it's easier to go out and avoid having those grease particles settle into the upholstery.  We figure it's all part of the Pod fun.  Flexibility is the key!

Taking along a vanilla soy-wax candle (the kind in the jars) to burn is one of the best ways to get rid of lingering odors. Unlike the floral scented candles and sprays, my wife can tolerate, and even likes, the vanilla candles. Just be sure to have it on a heat-resistant surface. It is either that or some citrus scented air freshener such as Citrus Magic.

Absolutely no vanilla scent. I hate it. If it smelt like a vanilla shake, yes. Line perfume, no.

The vanilla candles we get are much more vanilla shake. I don't know what Line perfume is. When burning, the vanilla smell is not strong. It just seems to deal with stubborn cooking odors quite effectively.

I agree, we bought a 2014 R-pod with the small slide out. My husband liked it because of the easy towing. I never even noticed no hood and exhaust fan, guess I kind of took for granted if you had a stove top, there would be exhaust. Makes the burners kind of a waste, you can use the microwave but dry camping without electricity...your kind of out of luck for anything fried. Whoever decided that wasn't thinking, be nice to have after market brackets to hook one up

Very bad design!!!

I bought a small fan to set between the stove and door if we need to cook when the weather is rough. Other than that we have the outside grill. I bought a Smoke Hollow grill that works great. Pricey but good. Gas fired 3 burner. One burner is for smoking wood chip or briquettes. Big enough to cook several steaks or other large cuts of meat. Temp range from 175 - 600.

We do our cooking outside also, but owning a Motorhome and travel trailer prior to my R-pod. At the coast when it gets cold and windy...a exhaust fan is very much needed. The company needs to come up with a exhaust fan after market to fix their mistake of not having one in the first place.
Hoping on here...someone comes up with how to install a exhaust fan.

I agree. Windy and wet are the only time I cook inside.   I can cook in the cold. Or should I say above 35.

My Rpod is a 2014 178. The kitchen is in the middle in the pop out and the smoke alarm is over the bed in the back of the trailer.

We just did the same thing on our Maiden Pod Voyage: set the smoke alarm off, first meal.

Like others I think outdoor cooking has to be the answer. The more I think about it the more I realize that most of my cooking is a greasy, splattery mess anyway, and that would just stink up and slime up the Pod permanently. but it would not nearly as bad with an exhaust fan...

The point is well taken: WHY IS THERE NO EXHAUST FAN OVER THE COOKTOP?  Not even as an option? An intellectual failure from the Good Folks at Forest River. IMHO.

Ha, just returned from a 5 day trip and I tried the shower cap trick.  It did the job, no beep beep beep at 7:00 am, and I used red to help remind me to remove it after cooking is over with.  I had to "take it in" a bit with a stapler.  I think a doggy bag and a rubber band would do the trick also.

Our detector must be super sensitive. I guess that is great if I have a fire. Wife fixed toast in a toaster and it set it off. I could not see any smoke. Shower cap cover in the works. We cook very little in the camper it was just an easy way to prepare toast.

My wife and I set our smoke alarm off with the campfire outside our very first trip out with our new Pod. The campfire was 20ft from the corner of the Pod so the wind was blowing just right with the open door and who would have guessed. LOL

And we had several friendly camper neighbors around the campfire who enjoyed the experience. Was the talk of the group all weekend.

Now we will use the shower cap trick !

Thanks for that idea.

Stove range Vent.

This is a mod I have not seen anybody else do yet, but is surprisingly easy and quick to do.  I quickly tired of opening the window and running the fantastic fan while cooking breakfast.  Nothing worse than freezing my butt off while cooking the pancakes!!!

I moved the stove back against the wall and eliminated the dead space behind it, added a range vent that vents into the refrigerator vent space and added some prep space in front of the stove.  It took all of 6 hours from start to finish including making the custom cutting the board.  I will be adding a piece of stainless steel backsplash to protect the wall.   I will probably just glue it to the luan, though in theory I should put in some spacers so it is not touching the wall.

Process:

Drill a hole in the wall with 4.25" hole saw cut in 1/2 piece of plywood, mark hole,
drill hole
slip in 4" louvered dryer vent, cut off extra part that goes through hole
staple plywood to camper from inside
screw vent to plywood.
insulate the refrigerator compartment when you realize it is only seperated from the inside of camper by 3/16" luan!!

Buy Heng industries 20" stainless steel rear vented rv 12V hood.
Modify to vent downwards using HVAC boot, small piece of metal, and some tape.
Use 4" elbow to direct out of the vent.
Take off the puck light and wire to the fan.

Just remove cover, undo 4 holes, remove stove (undoing the gas flare joint makes this easier, though not strickly necessary)

cut new hole by measuring old by drilling four corners and using a jigsaw,
bend the flexible copper pipe a little bit, plunk stove in new hole
screw in stove, test gas if you disconnected with some soapy water.
cover old hole.

All Done!!

notes: If you like to use plug in appliances, move vent a few inches further over from where I placed so you can get at the outlet.

Also I am venting into the refrigerator space, which is NOT going to pass code, but I could not come up with a use case that would cause problems, especially since the vent is louvered.  You could easily vent right through the wall and it would work better with more airflow.  I have had problems with dust getting into my old camper through the vents on rough Utah roads despite the louver, so I decided on the refrigerator compartment.

Kevinscamps idea for 180 is not readily adaptable to the 179 model; no cabinets above the range, and the wall behind is the curved front wall so the hood could not be wall-mounted.

I've considered all options for the 179 and the only thing that I've been able to come up with is a small exhaust fan mounted in the sidewall, to the left of the stove. It would have to be small (like maybe 4-6" in diameter), 12 volt and designed for thru-the-wall mounting. So far I have not found anything on the web that would work.

You could get a 12V 4 inch dia computer muffin fan, cut a square opening and mount it right in the sidewall. Add a 4 inch dryer vent on the outside and a screen on the inside. Should almost fit within the wall. Biggest problem would be concealing the wires probably.

Not a bad idea at all - I'll look into it! One way to handle the wires would be to put it into surface-mount plastic channel, would only need to run for a bit until it gets down into the countertop/cabinet below.

Even easier would be a strip of permabond tape over the wires, that stuff is tough and lasts forever.

You could mount the fan near the back wall (not too close there is a 1 is aluminum box tube in there). You'll need a switch so maybe a surface mount rocker something like this

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G17HWW8/ref=sspa_dk_detail_3?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B07G17HWW8&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=f52e26da-1287-4616-824b-efc564ff75a4&pf_rd_r=HTF958PRF435W7FMJYTS&pd_rd_wg=JW7Xu&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&pd_rd_w=7BtNO&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pd_rd_r=ac310546-d23a-11e8-b4d0-e1b91b9d888c

Use the switch to conceal the wiring back to the corner and run the wires from there down the corner to the countertop. I didn't see a 1 inch thick muffin fan but that would be ideal, it would fit flush in the wall on both sides.

Let us know how in works out, I have a 179 too.....

I prefer to cook greasy meals outside also. Sometimes weather forces us inside our 2017 179 with smoke detector over the bed. The smoke detector often goes off when cooking but it has a 5 minute delay on it by pushing the test button on the front. Works good for us.

We prefer to cook outside, t just seems to go with camping. If the weather is bad there is a myriad of microwaveable food available. Breakfast to Dinner. I applaud the mod, but to be honest in 3 years I have never used the stove. Nice to have and I'm sure has a retail sigifigance, but for me no value added.
