Hello Podders,

i am currently towing my Rpod 180 with a 2002 Ford Escape V6

i will be in the market for a new (used) car/truck soon - i.e. within the next year, and i'm wondering what you use for towing your Rpods?

i'm kind of a Ford/Nissan/Honda/Toyota person
not a big fan of chevy/GM products

I have a 2017 R- Pod 178 that I tow with a 2009 Toyota Highlnder 4x4, 3.5L V6, factory trailer tow package (rated at 5,000 lbs tow capacity), WHD hitch and sway bar. We recently returned from a 1800 mile trip thru mountain passes, winds and 90 degree temperatures. I couldn't be happier with the Toyota.

We tow our 2016 179 with a 2012 Toyota Highlander V6 with tow package. It gets stuck on soft ground occasionally because it's FWD, but we've never had an issue with it on the road and it has handled just about every mountain grade we've thrown at it. The only time we couldn't maintain the speed limit was on a couple of 9% grades.

We will be towing with a 2012 F150. It has the 5.0 engine it . Even thought it is a four wheel drive we are averaging 18.4 MPG. This is a combination of highway and city. Does anybody have an idea what we can expect when we start towing the new 179 when we get it?

We tow with a 2012 ford Expedition EL and love it.   I would highly recommend a large SUV for anyone towing an R Pod .  Generally the large SUV's have the same frame, engine, transmission as the pick ups, they just have a much better interior storage area.

We tow our 179 with a '15 Jeep Grand Cherokee Eco Diesel.

Posted By: StephenH

We started towing our RP-179 with a 2016 Ford Escape SE with 2L Ecoboost engine. That was until December when we had an accident which put the Escape out of commission for an extended period. To continue our trip and get home, we purchased a 2010 Nissan Frontier. The Frontier has a 6100 lb tow rating compared to the 3500 lb tow rating for the Escape. At higher elevations, the Escape did better because of the turbocharger which the Frontier lacks.

If I were shopping now, I would want to wait until this fall when the 2018 Ford F150 is expected to get a 3L Diesel. If I understand correctly, Nissan will be putting a Diesel in the Frontier for the 2018 model year also. Either one would be a good choice. If you don't want to wait, the Ford Ecoboost engines are pretty amazing. The turbocharger makes a huge difference when towing at any significant altitude. The downside is that it usually requires premium fuel when towing. On our last trip, Diesel was significantly less expensive then premium. That difference can add up to significant savings on long trips. Enough long trips can help pay the difference in the cost of the Diesel engine.

SUV vs. Pickup? There are advantages to each one. I like the SUV for handling and interior storage as mentioned by Vann & Laura. I like the pickup since things like a generator, spare propane tank, and gasoline for the generator can go in the bed of the pickup along with other things one might wish to carry. We have a hard tonneau cover on ours which keeps things in the bed dry. If it had not come with that, I would be looking for a cap for additional height plus the waterproof storage.

We tow with a recently purchased F150 with the 3.5L Ecoboost and 10 speed tranny with tow package.  Pulls the hills and passes of Idaho with no problems so far, and I use regular gas. Still deciding if I need WDH or sway control - a trip down the always windy Columbia Gorge OR to the coast in the near future will help me decide.

For the 3.5L Ecoboost, does your owner's manual specify regular or premium while towing? Our 2L Ecoboost Escape specified Premium for towing and best performance while not towing, but regular ok for daily use while not towing.

Edit: From my searching, I found that while you can run regular, Ford recommends premium for situations where the engine is being stressed. Towing is one of those situations, so premium is recommended. Given that you are nowhere near the towing capacity of an F150 3.5L Ecoboost, you are probably just fine using regular. The 2L Ecoboost of the Escape, OTOH, was definitely pushing the limit and premium was definitely needed.

I tow with the 3.5 ecoboost I have only use regular while towing the pod. I used premium once with the pod and noticed no difference. I have used premium once while towing  a 9000 lb boat and trailer over the Sierras from Reno to San Luis Obispo. The 150 forums I'm on suggest premium while towing anything over 5000lbs in the hills, (stressed).

I originally towed my former 2013 R-Pod 177 with a 2003 4Runner. Then replaced the 4Runner with a 2013 Touareg TDI. I might give the nod to the Toyota for reliability (the VW has been pretty goo so far), and for off road the 4Runner is hands down the winner, but the Touareg is so much better on the road and towing.

New to r-pods, recently purchased a 179 and am hoping to tow across country with my 2016 AWD Kia Sorento, which has a 5000 lb. tow rating. Thoughts?

Posted By: StephenH
Date Posted: 16 Apr 2017 at 1:41pm
Given that it has a 5000 lb tow rating, I would say that you made a good choice. You will still want to use a weight distribution hitch with sway control. We use an Equal-i-zer 4-point sway control hitch. Others use a Fastway E2 hitch. Others use an Andersen No-Sway hitch. There are others out there also. It is always better to have sway control and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Other than that, follow your owner's manual and Kia's instructions for towing and you will be okay.

Hello Podder Family,

Thank you all for your great replies and very helpful information
i really appreciate it

Does anyone have any thoughts, knowledge, insight or recommendations on any vans that might do the job - of being my everyday car and a tow vehicle for my 180?
i am a massage therapist so i need a vehicle that can haul my massage table and accessories, while giving me easy access to getting these things in and out - thus, thinking that a van might be a great option.

That's great to know! I'm glad you mentioned it because we are in the market for a 177 and we were wondering the same thing. We have a 2009 Highlander as well with 5,000 tow capacity too.  Curious, what brand hitch and sway bar you use?

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Fastway E2 600/6000. We have the round bar version for our Highlander and 179. My wife hated the old WDH we had that had a separate sway bar; she has no problems with the E2.

The Trailer Life towing guide for 2016 ( http://www.trailerlife.com/trailer-towing-guides/ - http://www.trailerlife.com/trailer-towing-guides/ ) shows a couple of configurations for the Chevy 3.6L vehicles, and i'm guessing you have the Colorado, not the Traverse.  Without the towing package, your capacity is 3500 pounds, but it jumps to 7000 pounds with the package.  In my opinion, and others WILL differ, 3500 pounds is barely enough.

We were towing with a 2016 Ford Escape 2L Ecoboost with towing package. It was adequate, but better is the higher tow rating with the towing package. That will also come with the transmission cooler and connectors for the trailer wiring in addition to the hitch. The one area where the Escape was better than our current 2010 Nissan Frontier LE Crew Cab with 4L V6 is in power at any significant altitude. The turbocharger compensates for altitude. The Frontier looses 4% power per 1000 ft of elevation. The Escape did not. The transmission had a couple more gears also so it was somewhat better in the mountains than the Frontier. The reason for the tow vehicle change was not the tow rating, but the accident we had in December when we hit a combination of ice and a 40 mph crosswind that was too much for the vehicle to manage. I don't think the Frontier would have done much better in that situation. Because the Escape was out of commission for an extended period, we needed something to get us and our patched-up R-Pod home.

Jim, Thanks for posting the link to the Trailer Towing Guides. That was informative. The 2017 issue has a lot of useful information about hitches and other topics. I will be reading that more thoroughly.

We're lugging our (new to us) 177 around with a '02 Toyota 4Runner.  I love Toyotas, this is actually my 3rd 4Runner.  However, with that said, the 3.4L and the 4 speed tranny are DOIN WORK to drag the R Pod up and down the mountains here in VA.  I also have 31" all-terrain tires; not helping.  I'll give it credit, though--foot on the floor, climbing long, steep grades, the temp gage never budges, and the A/T oil light never comes on.  I couldn't imagine altitude efficiency/power loss out west.  Toyota claims 4,000 lb towing capacity, but I ain't buyin' it.  The ~2,600 lbs empty of the 177 is all it wants.  Besides the power, however, with the WDH and anti-sway bar, it tows great.  Also did the Tundra front brake upgrade conversion, that helped considerably with stopping.

Towing our 2016 1/2 with a 20102 Toyota 4Runner4wd rated 5,000lbs     Plenty of power and no issues.  We broke down kicking and screaming and got an Equalizer hitch. I'm now a believer. It is amazing the difference and ease in towing.  I never would have tried it if it wasn't able to be returned and now I'd never go back to just a sway bar.

The Trailer Life towing guide for 2013 says your Outback has a GVWR of only 3000 pounds.  Your 176 (if it's a 2017 model) requires a GVWR of 3786 pounds.  Your Forester has insufficient capacity.  Strongly recommend you reconsider your plans to tow that trailer with that vehicle.

We first towed our 177 with a '08 Explorer 4.0L V-6 back in 2011.  Last year we upgraded to a '13 Explorer 3.5L V-6.  We use an anti-sway bar only, no towing issues, mileage is like most others - around 12 mpg.

Pro:  the Trailer Life 2014 towing guide rates the Pathfinder 3.5L V-6 at a GVWR of 5,000 pounds.  This should be enough to tow an R-pod.

Wow!  fast work!  Recent model year towing guides provide a GVWR for the Frontier (with 4.0L V-6 engine) of 6100 and 6300 pounds for 4WD and 2WD respectively.  Very nice upgrade for towing!

I just bought a 2017 RP178 and a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL.  I towed the trailer home with just a basic 2" ball and got about 14 mpg going from Cloquet Minnesota to Isabella, up the big hill from L. Superior.  I was very happy with how it pulled.  It wasn't a windy day, so not a real sway test.  The rear dropped about 1.5 inches with the trailer hitched up.  I had 40 psi in the TV tires.  I am considering getting a Husky 32215 WD hitch with the factory installed ball.

I new to this business, but I'm happy with the pathfinder.  I routinely get 30 mpg driving on the county roads at 50 mph (without the trailer!!!).

When considering my tow vehicle I looked at factory tow package vehicles with a towing capacity of about twice what the rpod weighs. So far I'm very happy with my 2015 Toyota Tacoma 4x4, towing our 2016 Rpod 179. The temp gauge has never moved beyond its normal midpoint.

We use a WD hitch on ours (E2), but I don't think we really need it. Our TV is listed at handling up to 5,000 lb trailer without WD or trailer brakes.

At any rate, I'm pretty sure the WD hitch is a good move in general. I would highly recommend it to any of you that are pulling an R-pod with a smaller vehicle (say ~~ 3500 lb vehicle or smaller.

What speeds are you going when you get 10 mpg? Two things that help:
1. Limit your speed to 60 mph. If that is too slow for you, limit it to 65 mph. Anything above that and you are really cutting your mileage.
2. Put a wind deflector such as the AeroPlus or AeroShield on top of your Explorer. When coupled with holding your speed down, you will see a significant increase in mileage. That was my experience when I added an AeroPlus to the Escape we were towing with formerly. I finally figured out how to mount it on the Frontier we now have. I have not had the opportunity to test it yet. When we go to pick it up at the factory after it is repaired from this past winter's accident, I will have the chance to test it and see if it performs as well on the Frontier as it did on the Escape. In lieu of the wind deflector, you could carry a small boat inverted. It will serve the same purpose. Smile

We tow ours with a 2012 Nissan Frontier. We did tow it with a Subaru Outback R 3.6 but felt it was a little bit too much for it.

We just picked up our new 2017 Rpod 177 yesterday. We are very excited. We towed it with our 2015 Kia Sedona SX using a Blue Ox SwayPro WDH. We drove 70 miles home to North NJ hitting a few good hills along the way. Plenty of power throughout the trip. We averaged a little over 14 MPG. We kept the speed to 60 MPH on the highway. Happy with the performance we got.

Do you have the green one and were you on 287 north near Route 23 around 4 PM?  We past a new RPOD with temporary jersey plates and Scott RV wheel cover on it.  We honked as we passed  but the driver did not look over.  We were driving to pick up our RPOD at our daughters house to begin a trip.  Welcome to the group and enjoy your RPOD

We started with a 2012 Toyota Rav4 Sport w/tow package last summer when we got rid of our pop up and got the Pod.  Used a E2 hitch and the Rav did a lot better than I thought it would but we were at the Max.  We've up graded to a 2016 Toyota 4Runner and what a significant difference.  We leave on June 10 for a FROG rally in Kingston Ont so lots of highway driving coming up. We'll see how it goes.
