We are looking for a new tow vehicle. We are considering a Toyota Highlander. Has anyone used or are using one currently and if so, how does it perform? We currently have a 171 and an 2002 F-150 and would like to use a SUV. Any suggestions?

I can't speak for the current generation Highlanders, but we tow our 179 with a 2012 Highlander 3.5L V6 with tow package and it does a good job. The only times it has ever been incapable of maintaining the speed limit were on a couple of 9% grades in WV. It probably wouldn't have had a problem with a 171.

You might also take a look at the Dodge Durango. The V6 is in the same price range, has a few more HP, has an 8-speed transmission (the HL is only available with a 6-speed), gets about the same gas mileage, and has a 6500 pound tow rating. When it comes time to replace my wife's SUV, this is the vehicle I'm seriously considering.

Thank you! The new Highlander has an 8 speed transmission. Good information on the Durango.

I didn't realize that the HL had gone to an 8-speed.

Unless you plan to go AWD, the Durango would be a better choice for towing because it's RWD. It also has a proper frame, not a unibody like the Highlander.

You make a good point. I was getting the AWD that can be locked in while towing but after reading your responses, will look around more. Thanks again.

We pull our 2017.5 179 with no problem. Although I have to say, I haven't pulled over the Rockies yet..lol
Our TV is a 2016 Highlander AWD with factory tow pkg.  my problem is, I have to remember it's back there.  I find myself going faster than I want to sometimes on the freeway.  In time, I will find the sweet spot for my setup ...
Good luck
