We pulled out the Mattress that came with the camper and had a Futon Mattress installed.  Sleeps so much nicer and easier to lift it up to put on sheets or flip it over.

I found the perfect fitting 3 inch memory foam for our 174. The dimensions are perfect (75 x 56 finished) and fits like a glove with no cutting! It is a queen size Therapedic at Bed Bath and Beyond. Not cheap- but don't forget those 20% discount coupons never expire:

We just roll it up with bedding and all still attached and stow it on the bench next to the bathroom when we want the dinette made up. I would think it would be a good alternative to the "substandard" mattress I keep hearing about that comes with the 171/175/177 as it very easily flexes and bends to put sheets on.

Here it is with the cover it comes with. Two enthusiastic thumbs up from both of us for comfort too!! Thumbs Up

Thanks for posting about the mattress's guys.  I hate changing sheets in my Pod.  How hard is it to get the mattress out of the pod?

not as hard as I thought.  kinda bend it in half end to end.  I purchased a 9 inch memory foam mattress perfect fit for 399.00.  Love it.  Got it from bed in a box.  www.bedinabox.com

When you replaced the factory mattress that came with your POD was it a short queen mattress? And when you replaced it with the futon mattress, did you have more space between the futon and the 3 surrounding walls?

Yes, short queen.  We replaced ours after sleeping on it for 3 nights.  Should have replaced it after the first night, but I am a slow learner.  Got the mattress in a roll, wasn't cheap but here I am 6 years later and that pillow top mattress is just a comfortable now as it was the day I got it.

Hello, Yep I tossed out the cheap mattress that came with my RPOD 180 and got a full size 9 inch thick
futon. What a difference. If you go this route, it's worth purchasing a 12 dollar Wally world foam topper (1 and 1/2 inch) and place it on top of the futon. The topper stays in place with the fitted full sheet. Now I'm in heaven.
