I'm a 15 year reformed smoker. I don't know what compelled me to quit smoking. I went from 2 1/2 packs a day, to cold turkey. I didn't actually plan to quit, i just stopped and told myself i can have one later on if i want. Somehow that worked for me, and it was actually very easy. I had " planned " to quit several times before and failed everytime. I as hopelessly addicted. This one thing of promising myself i could have one later made it so easy to do. Hopefully osage you got it in time and are fully cured.

Osage,  I will put you on my prayer list and ask for your healing and that the chemo and radiation treatments will be successful.  At the age of 36 I  celebrated with my wife as we paid off our home, debt free, we had arrived!  Two months later (March 1990) I was diagnosed with an aggressive type of testicular cancer and was given a 40% chance of survival.  Pretty tough even for a Christian as I wasn't prepared to leave my wife and 3 children behind, but God had other plans.  By His grace I am still alive and enjoying life.  It was a rugged time in my life, surgeries and chemo, lots of prayer, many friends helping our family out, a time of faith growth in my life as well as for my family. Let's talk, you can do this.

I quit about 9 months after my first was born, after several tries before.  Had my last one the day after my birthday.  Massive tubs of cheese balls got me through it.  I know it is hard!

Prayer heading your way.

I have 1more week of RAD. treatments and 3 more chemo. then wait a month and then test to see if we are  cancer free or not. We have been stuck here at home sense last Oct. fighting this and we need to go some where even it's only down to Branson, Mo. for a couple of days

Posted By: furpod
Date Posted: 03 Mar 2017 at 10:04am
Hang in there.. I wouldn't wait that month.. heck it sounds like you will be in prime early season camping time.. spend that month camping and relaxing, then go back for the tests..

I know it can be tough. I also know that going out into public while receiving radiation and chemo is extremely risky since those attack your immune system, leaving you vulnerable to illness. Hang in there and recover your strength. Then go enjoy yourself.
My wife did not need chemo, but went through radiation for breast cancer. That was bad enough. She still does not have the stamina she had before.

Speaking as a cancer survivor, by the grace of God, it is a great thing to get out of the house/hospital even for 1 day when in the midst of chemo treatments, it does your soul and spirit much good.  I felt like a prisoner even when I was in the house day after day; very freeing to get outside and smell the air.

Great to hear you are feeling a bit better, and have an appetite.  When I was on chemo, appetite was gone.  My wife was so thankful when I began to get an appetite and begin to put some weight back on.  Thank you for keeping us updated !

That happened to us twice. Each time it was when we went to Las Vegas. I am sure the place where we rented the car on one trip skimmed the card. That was the only place I used that particular card on that trip. I don't remember the circumstances of the other time. With both, USAA picked up on it. Neither time was at a casino, jut in case anyone was wondering.

Your story among many others has been inspiration for me to try to quit again.
Started the Chantix program and today it's been 4 weeks since I had a smoke.
Impossible to know if I can continue on this life-path, but so far so good.
Thanks for sharing and hope your recovery continues to go well.

When our girls were young, we were visiting my wife's sister and husband. My brother-in-law lit up in front of them. The girls said, "You smoke uncle Tommy? That stinks!"

He put out the cigarette and that was it. Unfortunately, my wife's sister still smokes like a chimney and blames her persistent cough on her "just getting over a cold."

The point is, if the incentive to quit is strong enough, you can succeed. It is worth doing so. My grandparents had COPD and I lost at least one uncle to lung cancer.

Back in the mid-70's, my mother was in the hospital with cancer.  Hard to believe, but is was when you were allowed to smoke in hospitals! My parents always smoked when I was growing up, and then I began to smoke.  When I visited my mother this time, I pulled out a cigarette to light up and she looked at me and said "how can you smoke when I am so sick?". She meant it in a way to startle me that one day I could be battling cancer like her so she wanted me to stop smoking.  That was the catalyst for me.  I put the cigarette out, tossed the pack in the trash and never smoked again.  That was 1975, and I have never smoked again since.  Bama Pod, I am rooting for you!  You are off to a great start!

Great news!  Thanks for keeping us posted.  Your experiences rekindle what I went through 27 years ago; the chemo experience is something one never forgets.  Very thankful I have been granted this much life after being given a 40% chance of beating it back in 1990.  may you have many years ahead being able to enjoy life and enjoying God's great outdoors.
