Hi, my family(wife, 2 boys 9 & 5) and I are on the search for our first camper. We are pretty much novices, but before our boys get too cool to hang with us, we want to show them this fine country we live in. Our current TV is a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. I'm not totally familiar with towing capacities other than what I have researched (I think 3500lbs). I don't plan on changing my TV anytime soon. We are interested in the R182-g. The garage space and bunk beds are the deciding factor for us, size of bathroom being a drawback, but again, being novices we would appreciate any feedback on the type of pod we buy. Anyone towing with a similar vehicle I would appreciate any feedback on any modifications you made to your jeep. I've read all sorts of stuff about transmission coolers, sway bars, 7 pins, additional brake systems etc., but TBH, I don't understand most of it, and whether any of it is necessary.  I've been looking through the forum and have been somewhat educated on Pod ownership a little, but I just need some feedback from people with a similar TV.
Thanks in advance.

Hi murph
I am currently researching the heck outta finding a T.V. I bought an Rp172 @ 2120 pounds and was intending to use my subaru outback which has 3000 tow capacity. Ive decided its to risky to run a tow vehicle at its capacity at all times. Remember, everything counts in the load, the weight of the people, the cargo, the trailer, everything. I am now deciding between the toyota tacoma, and the nissan frontier, both with over 6000 pounds of tow capacity, tranny coolers, and extra electrical output to run the trailers electrical needs, brakes, lights etc.. I want to be sure that if i had any type of accident or anything, i would not be able to be criminally charged for something like being overloaded. Its not worth it. Its your call, but the 180 your looking at probably weighs about 2800 pounds. Just my opinion.

I suggest for anybody buying a trailer and have a TV with a ltd towing capacity to take the trailer to a scale. You may be shocked to find that the weight of the trailer is a whole lot more than the posted dry weight. I remember someone a few years ago posted that he bought a trailer, picked it up from the dealer then took it to a scale and it weight 460# more than the weight on the sticker.

I was told by my dealer that my Subaru Forrester would tow my 171 without any problems. Our first trip was 90 miles in Florida. We bought a Tacoma a week after we got back.

Hey Murph
I have a 182g and two kids as well.  MY TV is a 2015 Toyota Tundra with the 5.7 v8.  Under ideal conditions while towing, that being flat, clear pavement and no winds, it is almost hard to tell the Pod is there up to about 70mph.  But, with a 20mph head wind and hills, the tundra has to work and gets about 11mpg going 65mph.  The 182g is on the heavier end of the pods.  i think 3100# on the sticker.  you will probably be at 3800# with water, supplies, chairs, grills, food, pots, pans, coca-cola, etc.  If you are just planning on short trips, you could probably get by with your TV.  But, it sounds like you are planning to see the country.

FWIW-the 182g was my entrance into RV ownership.  Having a more than ample tow vehicle is the only thing i have done right so far the first time in this endeavor.  Rv's are great, but there is a lot to learn to make sure that your trips are fun.   You are wise to ask questions here and you have a good start.

As far as the 182g, i like it.  The outdoor kitchen is very handy. Bathroom is small, but not bad.  You can also use the outdoor sink faucet for a shower as well.  you might check out my mods to see the things i have done to the stock 182g.

Thanks for the response. I figured I was close to maxing out with the jeep. I have decided to get rid of the Jeep (it hurts just to type it) and look for a Tundra, like yourself. I went to a dealership today and looked the pods, they are pretty cool.
They didn't have a 182g to look at, but had many other layouts. Will keep researching.
Thanks again for the feedback.

Thanks, and you are correct. Too close to the line for a Jeep, going to trade in for a truck.
Thanks again for the feedback

I am getting a nissan frontier, its almost the same as the tacoma, a little smaller than the tundra, but at 6100-6500 pounds towing,  well able to pull the trailer if you want to save a few bucks. Your call.

Welcome Murph,
Good choice on tv. I to am looking for an affordable midsize pickup. Frontier is a solid vehicle.
As far as the bathroom, I camp in a lot of state parks. They have good showers. Just check before you go.Private campgrounds can b hit and miss. When I get my pod I'll get the wet bath and use it only when truly needed. This will open up more camping to me ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜€Again I camp mainly on state or federal campgrounds with showers.

Good luck ๐Ÿ€
