I own a Mazda CX5 with a 2.5 L AWD. The towing rating is 2000 LBS. All R Pods are heavier than that. With the right hitch and never plannig to cross the Great Divide, can you exceed the rating and not be unsafe or damage the SUV? I was interested in the 180 but that is 600+ LBS over the rating. I tow a light trimaran sailboat now with the CX5 but it is under the rating. BTW, we live in Wisconsin.

Short answer, no, you can't exceed the tow rating by that much and still be safe. In fact, even running at the tow rating is risky.

Thanks. That was my feeling too and we have tabled the idea until we have a different tow Vehicle with a higher towing rating.

5000 pounds is the minimum I would recommend. And at least a V6. Our 3.5L V6 Highlander is rated for 5000 and it tows our 179 quite nicely.
