I would like to turn up the temp in my home while we are gone camping for several days & then turn it back down before we get home. Such a system usually involves a WiFi enabled programmable thermostat ($$$), a full time internet connection ($$$), a home WiFi system including router ($$$), and a smartphone contract with a data plan ($$$). Seems like a lot of complexity and expense just to avoid setting the stat before you leave. Even if you already have the internet connection, WiFi network, and smartphone you still need the thermostat. We set the house thermostats as we leave and reset them when we return, same as turning the water off/on, the water heater off/on, etc.

In that case Lowes offers models from $99 to $249, but I have no knowledge of any. That said, and living in hurricane country, I have remotely operated cameras I check on the road  . I also use them to monitor house temperature and power outages. Go figure.

I have the Iris by Lowe's system. It is both for security and for home control. I have the Radio Thermostat. I can control it with my phone through the Iris app. I also have two outlets that I can control. I have a light plugged into each of them. We originally got it after we had a break-in while we were gone. The Iris system went through an "upgrade" which was not as smooth as it could have been. Tech support finally got the remaining issues solved, and my system is working great. Recently, Lowe's released the 4G cellular modem for backup. I had the older 3G system on version 1. It is good to get the cellular backup again as we have had a few outages of Time Warner's Internet service. There are several systems out there that will do what you want. We have 2 Honeywell TH8320WF thermostats that control both zones in our home both the AC and heat and we are very happy with them. We have had them for about 3 years so they probably have an updated model by now. They will also notify you if the heat or AC goes out and if the temperature drops below a pre-set level.

For the past 2 years (in January 2017) I have used the NEST thermostat. It works fantastic and allows you to program, heat or cool your home from your smart phone. Cost was $ 250 but well worth it to us as we can let the house set using minimal electricity while we are away. We have excellent internet service so that isn't an issue. If you lose power and don't have a backup, then the NEST programmable thermostat will obviously not work either. You can program this from your smart phone 24/7 for an entire week, it will then roll over and begin the process over on its own unless you wish to change temp ranges. | Make sure that the thermostat is compatible with your AC/heating system. We have a Carrier Infinity system in our house and none of the aftermarket smart thermostats are compatible. There is only one smart thermostat that will work, but it's rather expensive. |
