We've only been out once in our 'pod so far, but there is not wardrobe, etc of any kind in the 182G. We put clothes in baskets under the bed/dinette for the first trip but knew we had to do something else. So I came up with adding a drawer under the lower bunk. Now that its done, its probably impractically large since its tough to reach the back, but I think it will be great. We're headed out for 5 days on Thursday and we'll see how it handles the family. I used heavy duty 28" drawer slides and 3/4" sanded plywood throughout for durability and in case one of my kids decides they want to stand in the drawer one day. I wanted push to open drawer slides, because I didn't want any hardware to show (plus, I think the slideout would run into it) but I didn't want to shell out the money for the expensive drawer slides. So I ended up cutting in a finger pull at the end that you'll see in the last pic. I also put a Southco drawer latch in the back to keep it in place. I also had to relocate the outlet that was located where the drawer now lives. There was enough room under the bathroom door to house the box. I am interested in doing this as well to make that space more usable. I am curious about how you relocated the electrical socket. Did you access from through the vent under the shower or from under the bunk? Did you have to add any length to the wiring?
Finally, what is the southco latch you used to keep the drawer in place? Thanks and good looking drawer you have there |

The outlet was the easiest part. There's a portion of the bed panel that doesn't hinge. If you unscrew that, you're able to get under the bathroom there (also gets you a bunch more storage, as there's only some wires and pipes in there). There's plenty of wire to get you under the bathroom. You just have avoid a stud at the corner of the bathroom and cut your hole. I had to get a new box too, because the shallow box they used was too wide.
As for the southco latch, I'm not sure it was adequate. The latch I bought had a 13N rating. It looks like the drawer opened up in transit. I've got a magnet latch I'm going to try next. ------------- 2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 2017 Rpod 182G |

Thanks! I took mine apart yesterday to see what was inside and found the wasted space you are talking about. Now to come up with a plan. Relocate plug to under shower seems easy enough.
I think I'm gonna go with a drawer for the middle and add a hinge to the side compartment and try to free up some of that space by moving the wires to the outside wall. Maybe even reroute the garage sink drain towards the wall instead of it going straight through there. |
