here the question.....
when hooking the trailer chains to tow truck do you go behind the hitch and hook them facing the trailer or hook the up facing to tow truck?? The parts person at the trailer place and a customer standing near by said hook them the s part of chain facing trailer. CROSSING the chains of course. Maybe it is different here in Canada

Thank you for help

Cross them, yes.  As for which way to attach them, I don't think it matters.

This is something some people seem to have strong opinions about but I've never seen any evidence that it makes a difference.

Before I had chains with a retainer clip I always hooked them by going up through the hitch connector.  That puts the hook toward the trailer.  I figured that this way, if they bounced up and down on the road they would be less likely to bounce off since the shank and not the hook was through the hole. I'm not really sure it made much difference but it made me feel more safe.  Definitely cross them before hooking up.

We twist ours a couple of turns so it shortens the chain a bit and they dont drag or bounce.

Two biggest concerns are:  You don't want them dragging on the highway and you don't want them so short you can't make hard turns.  Agree they should be crossed and catch hitch before it hits pavement.

'If I remember correctly, California law requires that the chains be crossed before hitching.  Safe Travels.
